r Vegetables - Warm season vegetables can be set out now without protection, including cucumbers, eggplant, melons, peppers, pumpkins, squash and tomatoes. Beans and corn can be sowed directly in the ground in early June.

r A late frost or snow is possible up to June 6th based on historic records. Summer thunderstorms can also bring damaging hail, so be prepared to cover tender plants.

r Keep an eye on the onions and garlic to clip any of those that want to bolt (go to flower) as they weather warms up, if they flower, the root production will be reduced.

r Thin your large fruited fruit trees (apple, pear, peach, nectarine and apricot) to one fruit per 6 to 12 inches of fruiting wood if pruning was not done in the bloom stage.

r Clip off spent annual flowers (called deadheading) to keep them blooming all summer.

r Pinch Aster and Chrysanthemums - To encourage branching and more compact growth and produce extra flowers, pinch fall-blooming asters and chrysanthemums until around the 4th of July. Remove the top several inches of each stem if plants reach 8-12 inches or more.

r Get control of the weeds in any natural areas before they take over.

r Prune spring-blooming shrubs - If needed, prune forsythia, lilac, mock/orange after flowering.

r Houseplants - June is generally a safe time to take houseplants outside for the summer. Place houseplants in a protected place that is out of the wind and direct sunlight. An ideal place would be a covered porch or patio. Houseplants placed outdoors will need more water than those grown indoors and often need to be checked daily. Fertilizer can be applied every two weeks.
