April, Second Week:

r Blooming now in our garden: daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, forsythia, nanking cherry, phlox, pear-blossoms

r Start hardening-off cool-season vegetables and flower transplants before setting them out in the garden. Keep in a protected place near the house and withhold some water to toughen leaves.

r Use mulch and floating row cover fabric to be prepared for transplanting flower and vegetable seedlings. Mulch immediately after planting and use fabric to shield transplants from the hot sun for a week or so after transplanting.

r Keep up with weeds that may have developed in landscapes thinned by a dry winter and perhaps less water applied last season.

r Continue to plant cool-season vegetable seed such as lettuce, onions and peas before warm weather sets in. Hand water during the critical germination and early plant growth.

r Keep hands off tulip and daffodil foliage after flowers fade. Wait to cut foliage until it dies down naturally unless you are willing to replant new bulbs each year. Foliage produces food to build bulbs for the following year.
