April, Third & Fourth Weeks:

r Blooming now in our garden: phlox, alliums, nanking cherry, pear-blossoms and first crab apple blossoms with tulips and hyacinths fading

r Remove tree wrap around April 15. Continue planting shrubs and trees.

r Apply two to three inches of bark chips around shrubs, trees and perennials. Keep mulch away from the crown of the plant to prevent rot.

r Plant another crop of cool season vegetables such as lettuce, peas and onions - continue hand watering.

r Now is a good time to do the final soil prep to get ready for your tomato and pepper planting. I have had good results covering the raised beds used for tomatoes and peppers with red plastic mulch to hold the moisture and keep weeds out.

r Plant raspberries, strawberries, serviceberries, currants, gooseberries and jostaberries now. Protect these new plants if a late season snow occurs.
