August in the Colorado Garden:

r  Vegetable harvest is in full swing now. Be diligent about picking every day, or zucchinis will grow to monster sizes, carrots will get woody and keep picking the green beans to keep them going.

r  Hot temperatures may prevent tomatoes from setting fruit. To control this, shade the plant to cool it down, add a layer of mulch, and try to maintain uniform soil moisture.

r  Bugs in your garden will be plentiful this month. Before spraying, check to see if it is a beneficial insect. Beneficial insects feed on bad bugs that can harm your plants.

r  Maintain your lawn at a height of 2½ to3 inches. Lawn maintained at this height is more drought and heat tolerant and less prone to pests and diseases.

r  Yellow jacket nest size and nuisance problems are greatly increased this month. Place traps now to reduce the risk of getting stung.

r Cut watering times back toward end of August
