Make a Tank Top Tutorial

Learn how to transform your frumpy t-shirts into hot tank tops! You'll need one t-shirt, scissors, thread, sewing machine, and optional items include beads, necklace memory wire, clasp, and needle nose plyers. I rate this sewing project at beginner level. The size of your t-shirt doesn't matter very much as long as it's not too small. If it's way to large, you can cut out the extra fabric. The project gets even easier if you replace the beaded neckline with a strip of t-shirt material as a tie strap.

STEP 1: Cut the sleeves from just inside the armpit seam.

STEP 2: On the front only, cut from armpit to armpit, just under the neckline.

STEP 3: On the back only, cut straight across from the bottom of each armpit.
STEP 4: Press your seams in and sew from the top of one armpit down, across the back, and up the other armpit.

STEP 5: Press the neck hemline and leave a pocket of at least a half inch.
STEP 6: Sew across the neckline, making sure to leave the half inch pocket.

STEP 7: Bead your memory wire, attach the clasp, and thread the necklace through your neckline, gathering the fabric towards the middle.
STEP 8: If your tank top is too wide you can cut out the excess fabric equally from each side of the shirt, then sew it back up from the inside. If your tank top is too long, you can cut off the end, and sew around to make a neat hemline. You can use these strips of fabric as your neckline, in place of a beaded one. You can also use chain or ribbon. Happy sewing, and don't forget to send me your pictures!
