Ribbon Room

Last night I got to headline a show at the Ribbon Room with Teague Hayes. There was a bachelorette party there having a great time. After the show, Nicholas AKA "The Chameleon" was there and did a few minutes of material. Surprise! Not only was he there to do comedy, he was also the stripper for the bachelorette party.

The Chameleon and a very comfortable Brad...

...Still comfortable

Last night I decided I'm not going to do stand-up any more. I'm going to be a stripper. I might start jogging or something - maybe eat a few Yoplait's - I dunno. Those women lost their minds. You can't get reaction telling wiener jokes. Well, maybe if Nicholas told them.

Metallica

There's a little girl in my son's kindergarten class named, "Metallica". I'm not kidding.

If I named my kids after my favorite musicians their names would be, "Shania", "Mariah", and "Ol' Dirty Bastard".

It sounds weird but people name their kids after bands all the time. I guarantee there's some lady in Raytown right now saying, "You take yer shoes off in the house, Winger...And quit hittin' yer Twisted Sister."

Darren Carter, Big Fluff

Last night comedian Andrea Caspari and I went to the club to check out Darren Carter (the Party Starter) who is performing this week at Stanford's. I ended up doing a guest spot in the second show and absolutely TORE it up! I had a great set. The crowd was fantastic. That club has some of the best rowdy crowds, which I call "The Johnny Dare" crowd; that is, loyal fans of "The Johnny Dare Morning Show". They are there to 'let loose' and laugh.

Andrea Caspari, Darren Carter, Brad Meehan

Darren is great at really pumping up the crowd. He comes out to his own theme song written by Kansas City rapper "Big Fluff Nickolantern." It takes him less than two seconds to get an entire room on his side and really involves the crowd throughout entire the show - something I haven't seen to that extent.

During his closer, "Big Fluff" was in the crowd and came up on stage to perform the Darren Carter song. It was the perfect closer to an already energetic set.

Darren Carter, Big Fluff

Side note: "Big Fluff" said he was just a Darren Carter fan and contacted Darren through MySpace to ask if he could write him a song. Now his song is heard in every city Darren where performs. After the show, "Big Fluff" handed out CDs of his songs to people in the crowd. That kid has a drive and knack for self-promotion that will make him famous. No question.

At one point during Darren's set, some lady said she wanted "Brad's Big White Caulk" - a reference to one of my jokes. Who's popular?

Wrap up

Happy Easter.

I wrapped up my week with Theo and Drew at the Improv. The Saturday crowds were small compared to Friday. Maybe everyone went home for Easter.

Drew Hastings

Theo hurt his back and was hunched over the entire time. Between shows he was layed-out in the green room waiting for the Vicadin to kick in. I don't think it ever did.

Theo Von from MTV's Road Rules

Andrea Caspari showed up and did a set. She has a great opener about going shopping for a bathing suit. The clerks asks her if she wants a one piece or a two piece. She says, "Give me a six piece and a biscuit. I'll be waiting in the dressing room."

Nivens

Jason Nivens from 98.9 The Rock came out to the second show with his girlfriend. It was cool to see him laughing at the crap he inspired.

Front row laughers! She looked so good in her pants
I felt like I should call and thank her parents.

Drew Hastings, Theo Von, Seka

The week is going great. I'm working with Theo Von and Drew Hastings at the Improv. Drew is a master story teller. The first show Friday night was nuts. Full house, and BIG laughs. These are the nights that remind why I do this.

In the crowd that night was Dottie Hundley, AKA "Seka" - the famous porn star from the 70's & 80's who lives in Kansas City now.

Between shows I called my good friend Jason Nivens who hosts a show on 98.9 The Rock, Kansas City's big rock/metal station. He was on air so I kept calling and requesting songs like "Freeze Frame" and "My Humps." He didn't know it was me. Then I called back and asked to make a "Long Distance Dedication" to my mom in Michigan and asked if he could please play Cisco's "Thong Song."

Side note: Nivens was one of the guys that really urged me to do stand up in the first place so I will always be grateful to him for that. I can't imagine my life without comedy now. Blame him.

After the show I was interviewed by Kristen Hogan and photographed by her husband Alexander Hogan. Kristen is a sociologist and is writing about performance and the body - very interesting.
