(LOVEJOY)

(A) DEANE

ELLEN MARIA, daughter of Horace R., b. 1842 at Walpole, NH, her mother was Carrie Scribner or Clarissa Mason; m. John7 Eugene Lovejoy (#53) on 5 SEP 1857 at Claremont, NH; d. 30 SEP 1914 of cerebral hemorrhage at Claremont; buried at Pleasant Street Cemetery, Claremont with husband. Claremont Vital Records show that Ellen died at Claremont, a prior resident of Walpole, at age 75, and that she was born in Walpole. She was a resident of Claremont at the time of her death, a widow and retired. Her father was Horace R. Deane and her mother was listed as Carrie Scribner. She was buried on 4 OCT 1914. An ad appears in the 1896-97 City Directory for Claremont (see Eugene Lovejoy #53), showing her ownership of a boarding house in West Claremont. The National Eagle of Claremont printed the following obituary for Ellen on 2 OCT 1914.

"Ellen M. Lovejoy

The death of Ellen M. Lovejoy occurred at her home at
West Claremont on Wednesday, September 30. In spite of the seventy-five years Mrs. Lovejoy had been in fair health until last Monday when she suffered a severe shock, from the effects of which she died two days later.

Ellen Deane, daughter of Horace and Clarissa (Mason) Dean was born in
North Charlestown. When fifteen years of age, she married Eugene Lovejoy of Unity and shortly after moved to Claremont, of which town she had been a resident the greater part of her life.

She is survived by a daughter and three sons, including Edward Lovejoy, a foreman at Jarvis Paper Mill at
West Claremont, and Charles Lovejoy of St. Johnsbury, VT. The other son is a resident of Bellows Falls. Funeral services are to be held from the home at West Claremont on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m., with interment in the Pleasant Street Cemetery. Rev. W.E. Patterson will officiate."

From the Sullivan County Probate Records in Newport, NH, the following information can be found concerning her estate. Petition was made by Edgar E. Lovejoy of Claremont and Charles Lovejoy of St. Johnsbury, VT, for administration of the estate of Ellen M. Lovejoy, who died in testate on Sept. 30, 1914. Administratrix recommended was Lillian H. Lovejoy of Claremont. The petition also included comment that there was no real estate and personal estate of $100.00 value. This petition was granted on 21 OCT 1914. Heirs to the estate were listed as Edgar E. Lovejoy and Charles Lovejoy, sons. An administrator's bond of $200.00 was submitted by Edgar and his brother Cecil E. Lovejoy, both of Claremont. The inventory of the estate was taken by George W. Paul of Claremont. The personal estate was assessed at $17.19, which consisted primarily of household goods and $12.07 in a bank account. The inventory was approved on 22 NOV 1914 by J.M. Martin, Judge of Probate. A petition to sell the inventory of 7 NOV 1914, was granted on 20 NOV. The final accounting of the estate showed that it contained $184.19, and that the expenses against it were $184.19, which included funeral charges of $105.57.

2 - HORACE R., probably son of JOHN, b. 1811 at Bethel, VT; m. about 1830 to Carrie Scribner (NH Vital Records) or to Clarissa MASON (Ellen's obituary and the 1850 Census). His parentage is at present, unknown, however it is possible that he was the son of James or John DEAN, who both could have had a 9 year old son in Bethel, VT in 1820 Census, and are two of the three DEAN’s living in Bethel in 1810 Census. As Horace’s first son is named John, the author is pursuing that line of query until the facts prove otherwise.

Horace first appears in Walpole, Cheshire County, NH in 1837 NH State Census; listed in 1840 US Census in Walpole, then in 1850, he is listed in Charlestown. The 1850 Census shows Horace at age 39, b. VT, in Charlestown, Sullivan County, NH, with his wife Clarisa, age 39, b. about 1811 in NH, and lists Ellen, age 7, b. NH,; John, age 5, b. NH; George, 4 months old, b. NH; and includes George HOWARD, age 27, a farmer, b. in NH; Harriet HOWARD, age 19, b. NH; and Martha J. HUBBARD, age 12, b. in VT.

It is likely that Horace and Clarissa died before 1860, as they have not been located in the 1860 Census, however, the children John R. DEAN, age 15, b, NH & George P. DEAN, age 10, b. NH can be found in the 1860 Census for Westminster, Worcester County, MA, living with Thomas H. BAILEY, age 58, a farmer , b. in MA, and wife Harriet P. BAILEY, age 29, b. in NH, and Julia Ann HOWARD, age 7, b. NH. It becomes fairly clear that the Harriet HOWARD in the 1850 Census was Horace & Clarissa DEANE’s daughter, and Julia Ann HOWARD was the daughter of her first marriage to George HOWARD. Ellen married John E. LOVEJOY in SEP 1857, so stayed behind in NH. Obviously, Harriet remarried prior to 1860 to Thomas BAILEY and brought her two younger brothers and her own daughter with her to MA.

Further research in Charlestown, and Walpole, NH is warranted to determine the deaths of Horace and Clarissa DEANE.  From NH Vital Records listing for Ellen’s death, listing her mother as Carrie Scribner, (while her Obituary clearly says Clarissa MASON) it is possible Clarissa remarried to a Scribner after Horace’s death prior to 1860, another possible avenue of further research.

(Note: A Horace C. Dean is shown in the 1850 Census for Winnhall, Bennington Co., VT, but because of his age cannot be #2's father. Horace Deen (alias Horace C. Dean) is listed in 1850 in Claremont, but he is older with a different wife and children.  A Horace Dean died at Claremont on 10 DEC 1884 at age 82, a farmer, of prostration, and is probably Horace C. DEAN. In the original proprietor's records of Claremont, a reference is made to posting a notice for a meeting of the town proprietors. The records mention posting a copy of this notice at the tavern of Horace Dean, in Claremont, on 15 NOV 1845.  A Horace Dean had a prominent farm in town. Tracking this Horace C. DEAN through the Census’ seems to indicate he is not the Horace R. DEANE who was the ancestor of the family line in this research effort.)

Children

Harriet P., b. 1831 in NH, m. 1) George Howard before 1850 in NH, listed with him in 1850 Census in Charlestown, Sullivan County,  living with father and mother; m. 2) Thomas Hazen Bailey prior to 1860 (b. 28 JAN 1802, at Lunenburg MA, he had been married 1st to Eliza Boutell before 1828, listed at age 48 with her age 48 and daughter Margaret A. Bailey age 22 as a Surveyor at Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA, Eliza may have died before 1860. Thomas Hazen BAILEY is listed in Ancestry.com’s World Family Tree #1067661, as the son of Josiah BAILEY of Lunenburg, MAand Margaret Little HAZEN of Shirley, MA. ). Harriet is listed in 1850 Census in Charlestown, NH with 1st husband George Howard, living with her parents, and then in 1860 Census she is age 29 with her siblings John R. (age 15) and George P. (age 10) DEAN and her daughter Julia Ann HOWARD (age 7) living with 2nd husband Thomas H. Bailey (age 58), at Westminster, Worcester County, MA.  In 1870 Census, Thomas H. BAILEY, age 68, wife Hattie, age 38, and daughter Julia H. age 17 are shown living in Lunenburg, Worcester County, MA; and again in 1880 Census, he (age 78) and wife Harriet P. (age 48) are listed in Lunenburg without Julia. Julia, at age 27, shows up in 1880 as the wife of George C. JEWETT, age 33, a house carpenter, with a 1 month old infant in Lunenburg. !850 Census shows George to be the son of George A. and Susan S. JEWETT of Lunenburg. Neither Harriet nor Thomas Bailey have been located in 1900 Census, but Harriet shows up again in Westminster, Worcester County, MA at age 77, a widow, as a housekeeper for 82 year old Elizabeth W. Howard at 9 Main St., Westminster. The 1920 Census shows George C. JEWETT, age 73, with wife Julia A., and daughter Nellie, age 27, with Harriet BAILEY, at age 87, a widow, and George’s mother-in-law, all living at 62 Massachusetts Avenue in Lunenburg, MA. Julia and George JEWETT are listed in Lunenburg in 1900 Census as well, with children: Nellie F. age 20, Arthur H. age 17, and John A. age 4.  The History of the Jewetts of America, Vol I, shows George Cortland Shattuck JEWETT (# 5636) as the son of Deacon George Allen JEWETT (#3184) (Edmund, Edmund, Jedediah, Joseph, Nehemiah, Joseph, Edward) and Susan Spaulding Patch, and shows George C.‘s marriage to Julia Ann HOWARD.

Ellen Maria, (See #1 Above)

John R., b. 1845 at Walpole, NH; is with parents in Charlestown, NH in 1850 Census; moved to Westminster, MA with sister Harriet before 1860 where he appears at age 15; appears again in 1870 Census in Newport, Sullivan County, NH at age 24, a farm laborer, with wife Emma E. age 22. Ancestry.Com’s World Family Tree ID # 1577358954 shows her to be Emma Elisa PUTNAM, daughter of Asahel PUTNAM and Valencia C. HOLMES, but this is not verified. An Emma E. Putnam can be found in the 1860 Census for Claremont, Sullivan County, NH at age 11 with father Asabel PUTNAM. In 1880 Census, John R. DEAN is found in Troy, Cheshire County, NH, at age 35, working in a Tannery, with wife Emma E. and children: Frank E. age 7, Emma L. age 4, Mabel D. age 3, and Martha (or Matta?) J. age 1 month. Also listed with family in 1880 is Josie ALEXANDER, age 21, a servant.  Emma E. DEAN is listed at age 52, a widow with 2 children living of 4, in 1900 Census in Troy, NH as mother-in law to George M. STAMFORD, age 22, apparently her daughter, listed in the census is Evalynn STAMFORD age 24 (would have been Emma L. from 1880 Census). Emma is still in Troy in 1910, listed as a nurse, age 62, widowed, for the Carlos M. BARNARD family. In 1920, Julia, still in Troy, NH, is living alone at age 71.

George P., b. between 1849-50 at Charlestown, NH; appears at age 4 months in 1850 Census in Charlestown, NH with parents; moved to Westminster, MA with sister Harriet to appear at age 10 in 1860 Census; probably is the George DEAN shown at age 20 in Westminster, MA 1870 US Census, living with Ferdinand Dickinson family, as a laborer; this could also be the George DEAN, age 32 listed in 1880 US Census for Troy, NH as a Teamster, with wife Ellen H. age 20. George’s death is listed in 1894 Claremont Town Report, as 13 SEP 1894 at age 44 years, 7 months, showing father Horace as born in Bethel, VT, and listing mother as Clara Mason. Note: This George P. DEAN should not be confused with the George DEAN b. in 1846 in Claremont, son of Horace C. and Emeline (Pressey) DEAN.

3 - JOHN, son of _______, b. about 1779 in CT; settled in Bethel, VT before 1810, as he appears in 1810 US Census for Bethel, and is in Bethel for 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 US Census. As of 1830 Census he is shown living only with his wife. In 1850 Census, he is shown at age 71, b. CT, with wife Sally, age 70, b. MA. Bethel,VT Episcopal Church Records show John Dean d. in 1853 in Bethel.
