b. 1614 in Scotland; m. Alice _____, who was also b. in Scotland in 1614;
a Scottish Presbyterian, he moved to Northern Ireland to escape religious
persecution from Catholics after birth of 3rd daughter Hannah; he, his
wife, and three daughters came to New England in 1637; an early settler
of Salem, MA where he first reided and set up a lumber business; denied
permission to operate a business in Marblehead, MA by the court in 1646;
bought two houses from George Barlow in Exeter, NH on 10 OCT 1648 and moved
there; had lumber mills on the Exeter River and the Oyster River; became
partners with son-in-law John Bean after he married daughter Hannah in
1654 until about 1660; d. at Exeter,NH in 1714.
