Turtle Rehab at the SC Aquarium
A loggerhead sea turtle was found by fishermen in Hamlin Sound behind the Isle of Palms.
This turtle was taken to the SC Aquarium and is now undergoing extensive medical treatment.
The turtle was found wrapped up in the lines of a crab trap. The cords were wound around it's left
front flipper and around it's neck. Only time will tell whether this animal will survive to be released back
into the ocean. For now her future is in the hands of the capable and caring staff of the Aquarium.

Dennison Montessori Joins in the Efforts to Help the Loggerheads

From an email received by the Island Turtle Team.
Hi Mary (Mary Pringle – Island Turtle Team)
I m hoping you will remember me you were very helpful in e-mailing information to me on
Loggerhead turtles last fall while my daughter Emily was having the Pennies for Loggerheads
campaign in her classroom here in landlocked Colorado!
It has been awhile since I have e-mailed and thought you might like to know
the results of the Pennies for Loggerheads effort. Emily’s class (consisting of 1st, 2nd & 3rd
graders) raised ~$25. I had asked the class if they wanted to donate to the Island Turtle
Team or adopt a Loggerhead from the SC Aquarium for a year. Well, the votes were
unanimous they wanted to adopt a Loggerhead. I pitched in the remaining amount and
Room 108 of Denison Montessori Elementary here in Denver is the proud adoptive
community of a Loggerhead at the aquarium. The kids are very excited! It was very
helpful that they sent a photo of a Loggerhead (of course, the kids think that the Loggerhead
in the photo is indeed the ONE they have adopted!) and what the money would be used for.
There were especially interested in how the money will be used to rehabilitate turtles
(I m hoping some of the money has already gone towards helping Hamlin and Georgia yep,
I’ve been checking the website very frequently these days!) The most important lesson
learned through all of the information that you had provided, is the need to help in preserving
these beautiful creatures and
how to help in preserving their habitats. Thank you Mary!

Another New Arrival at Turtle Rehab
Another sub-adult loggerhead was found in open water with several
deep wounds and a deep propeller slash cutting completely through her carapace (shell). Since being brought into the Aquarium this turtle has begun
eating and is receiving treatment for it's wounds. Some surgery may also be in this turtles future to close the gaping cut in her
carapace to stablize the area.
