Zany Things I'd Love to Try

Thing Number One: I'd like to try fixing my scanner so that I can explain some of the zany things I'd like to try...

After all, how can one possibly imagine these things without a doodle or two?

Jig for Cold Bending Coils

By using a pair of old circular saw blades to make a ratchet, I think I can rig a contraption for turning thinner bars (3/8" & less) into coils. The coils can then be sliced into rings.

Flexible Drive Shaft

My Dremel tool has one... Why shouldn't a treadle? Maybee a bunch of small u-joints all lined up inside a garden hose... An ordinary 3-8" drill chuck would go on the end Opposite the treadle. A simple treadle could then be used to power a variety of mechanical tools.

"My Little Power Hammer"

A Little Giant makes the business part go up and down by a drive that turns round and round. So does a sewing machine... I'd have to rig a means of holding the dies in place, and way to open & close the gap (perhaps with a screw-supported table...)

"Sonic" Hammer

Mount two speaker coils on plates welded to a vice. Rig die holders in the coils. Hook coils up to low voltage AC. "Rapid light blows."

Cable Welded Pictures

Some guys make "Damascus" from cables. One guy (Steve Meier) makes an American flag pattern by carefully stacking bars, welding them, and then slicing & unfolding. (I like to think of the process as "the steel version of paper dollies.") I want to try combining the two techniques. I figure that I'll start with geometric shapes and work my way up to "the Abraham Lincoln Bowie."

Electric Forge

(But not what you think...)

By passing several amperes of current through an iron bar, it will get hot... A 15amp household circuit stepped down to 12VAC should make an 8" long 1/4" round flash-vaporize...

Cupola Furnace

I found a web page that includes a tutorial for back-yard iron casting! (Mild steel casting, actually.)

Silver Electroplating

Actually, this one isn't so zany until one consideres that I'm refering to the inside of brass goblets.
