Abdelmagid Yousif
Secretary General of the Darfur People’s Association of Iowa

Abdelmagid Yousif is secretary general of the Darfur People’s Association of Iowa.  He fled from the Sudan to Cairo in 2002 after being expelled from his university in Khartoum for speaking out on the situation in Darfur.  He eventually gained refugee status in the United States and moved to Des Moines, Iowa.

Abdelmagid is actively involved with the community organization Des Moines for Darfur.  In April 2007 he helped organize the “Voices from Darfur” rally that was attended by more than 400 people from Des Moines and the surrounding communities.

Abdelmagid’s father, mother and other relatives remain in Darfur.  He is currently working as a nursing assistant and hopes to be able to continue his studies in the future.
