| The Fishing Lesson |
My sister and I went to the park. We saw fishes and dogs with their owners. There were ducks swimming in the pond. There was a waterfall. We went fishing for about two hours. We used worms for bait. Just as we were about to go back home we caught a fish! It was a beauty weighing about ten pounds. It looked like a catfish because it had long whiskers on its face. I was happy because I had never caught a fish before. The fish made a jump as we were holding onto it and we got wet with fish. The fish fell into my lap and my sister screamed. We laughed about it after we put the fish back into the water. We were wet and we went home to change our clothes. We went in the house and my mom said, "Come back here, you're punished for not telling me where you were going when you left the house." We had to go to our rooms. My Mom was mad not so much because my sister and I were wet but because she had been worried about us. My sister laid on her bed and read a book. Then I saw a bird that had flown into my room and I played with the bird. My sister fell asleep while she was reading her book. The next day my sister and I apologized to our mom for not letting her know that we had gone fishing at the park. She apologized for being mad with us but she said she had been very worried about us. My sister and I learned a lesson that day and I won't go fishing again unless I'm with a grown-up. |
| My Day at the Beach |
The beach is fun in the summer. The sand is warm on my feet. The breeze smells like the salty sea. The water is cool on my toes. I like to visit the beach with my family. One day when I went to the beach with my Aunt Deja. She is my best friend. She is not much taller than I am and she likes some of the same things that I do. One of the things we both like is the ocean. I left my Aunt Deja sitting under a striped umbrella on the beach. I walked into the water with my bucket. I could see some little fish swimming down near my feet. I scooped some of the fish up with my bucket. I took them up to the shore and I showed them to my aunt. She asked, "Can I try it too?" I said, "Yes, I will help you." My aunt and I went out into the ocean with our buckets to go fishing. We put our favorite buckets in the ocean. My bucket was red with crabs on it and I gave the blue one to my Aunt Deja. We walked into the salty water and when we got in up to our knees this big wave came over us. We caught fish while the wave came over us. We fell down but we held onto the fish in our buckets. We walked into shore and took at look at all of the fish. I had caught one that was as big as my hand but my aunt’s fish were tiny. Most of the fish were tan or gray. She told me that we couldn’t keep them out of the water very long or they would die. We walked back into the ocean and we put the fish back. They swam away as soon as we poured them into the water. It was fun but a little scary in the ocean. We like it better on the edge of the water where we can build sand castles and dig for crabs. I used my favorite red bucket again to help me make a castle in the sand. I took the damp sand and packed it in the bucket. I dumped the bucket again and again to make the walls of my castle. I found some shells to decorate it with. Then we walked in to the boardwalk to get something to eat. I wanted a hot dog and French fries. Aunt Deja wanted some chicken. After we ate we walked back to our umbrella on the beach. My aunt said we had to wait a couple of minutes before we could go into the ocean or we might get a cramp. We decided to walk along the beach while we waited. Aunt Deja found a horseshoe crab on the beach! We picked it up and put the crab back in the ocean. It was still alive and swam off into the water. We went back into the ocean to dive into the waves. Even though it is a little scary I really like the blue water. When I got so tired I couldn’t jump the waves anymore I got out of the water and sat on the towel to dry off. When my bathing suit was just about dry, my aunt and I got ready to go home. I like going to the beach with my Aunt Deja. |
| A Walk in the Woods |
One day a brother and sister wolf wanted to walk through the woods. Their dad was reading the newspaper. The sister said, “You don’t want to bother dad when he is reading his paper.” The brother said, “Yea, I know. Let’s just take a walk in the woods and not ask him. He can get angry when he is interested in reading an article and is interrupted.” His sister, Lucy, agreed with her brother because she was smaller than Fred and really didn’t want to have to ask her dad. She knew her father would probably say they could not go without him and she knew he would not want to leave his newspaper. They quietly left the house and started towards the woods. They knew they had to be careful in the woods because of wild animals and hunters. Lucy and her brother, Fred, just wanted to walk out and enjoy the countryside. Little did they know that there was a big black bear walking through the woods that day too. The bear was being followed by two hunters. A man and his son wanted to kill the bear because he had been killing many of the smaller animals in the woods. Fred and Lucy walked farther than they had ever walked before and the sun began set. They enjoyed looking at the small animals and the beautiful birds. The stream that ran through the middle of the woods had fish swimming in it. Wolves like fish and so they tried to catch them but the fish were too fast. Lucy said to Fred, “We had better start back to our house because it is scary in the woods when it is dark.” They looked around but weren’t sure which way to go. Lucy put back her head and howled at the moon hoping that someone would hear her. They waited but nobody came running to them. They began to walk slowly in a direction away from the stream. They knew the stream was in the middle of the forest so if they walked away from it that should get out of the woods. They were pretty pleased with their decision when they began to hear a crunching noise behind them. They turned around and saw a big black shadow. Lucy whispered, “Hurry Fred, I think it’s a bear.” The two little wolves began to run but the black shadow seemed to stay right behind them. They were doing pretty well when Lucy became tangled in some vines. Fred tried to chew the vines to get her out. Just about that time the black shadow came out of the woods and they looked up. It was their father! Father explained that he had not been able to find his little wolves when he finished reading his newspaper and he began to look for them. He had seen their prints going into the woods and had followed them. He heard Lucy howl. When he moved in that direction he had seen them. “Let’s go back home now,” said Father. No sooner had he said this than the black bear came crashing through the woods right towards them. Just about the time he came close to them the wolves heard a loud booming sound. It was a shot! The hunters walked out of the dark into the spot where the bear lay. The wolves watched from behind the trees. When it was safe they all ran home together. When they got back home Lucy and Fred told their dad they would never leave the house without telling him where they were going. Dad told them that he would never be so busy reading his newspaper he could not stop and talk to them. They all hugged and were happy to be home safely. |
| Tiger And the Fox |
My cat, Tiger, is special to me. She is a full-grown brown and black cat. Her fur is soft and shiny when I rub my hand across her back. She always jumps up in my lap when I am sitting down. When I pet her back I imagine that she is thinking about a pearl that she could roll around the floor with her paw. She feels happy on my lap. I know she is happy because she starts to purr. Tiger got outside one day and she went into the woods. She had never been outside without me before. I heard her meowing and I ran outside to see what was wrong. A fox tried to catch her and she was running toward the house. I called, “Here Tiger. Run fast before the fox catches you.” I said, “Out you go. Run back to the woods where you belong.” Tiger was looking at him from the door in the living room. The fox popped out of the kitty door and ran back to the woods. After Tiger and I finished dinner we went into the living room. I was reading a book to Tiger when the fox came back to the house. I looked up at the window and the window broke when the fox jumped up on it with his front feet. He wanted to catch Tiger and me for dinner. He was mad because he had been pushed out of the door earlier in the day. This time he was going to catch us. “Run, Tiger,” I said. “The fox is back and he wants to eat us for dinner.” Tiger ran and hid under my bed. The fox began to chase me around the house. I could run fast but he could jump over things in the house. I remembered the broom in the kitchen. I ran to the closet to get Mom’s red broom but it wasn’t there. “What can I do now?” I asked myself. I ran outside hoping the fox would chase me outside. It worked! When he ran out after me, I ran around to the front door and slammed it shut. Then I ran through the house to lock the back door. He tried to get through the kitty door again but I had put a chair across it so he couldn’t get inside. I closed the curtains over the front window so he would think that he couldn’t get back in through the window. I hurried into the bedroom with Tiger and shut my door. I called the people at the zoo and told them about the fox. I asked if they could come and pick him up. They said they needed a fox for one of their cages. That is how the fox got a home but can not hurt anybody. |
| Suzy in Dinosaur Land |
Suzy lived in Dinosaur Land. Dinosaur Land was a beautiful place because dinosaurs and people lived in peace. There were a lot of green trees and vines everywhere. The water was clear and clean. Yes, it was a place from long ago that had been forgotten. Suzy had traveled there with her mom and dad to study the animals and plants. They were both scientists. While they were there a storm with strong winds started. Suzy was blown in one direction and her parents in the other direction. Suzy’s parents disappeared and she was left alone. She looked for them for some time but the land was too big and she soon became tired of looking. She was not afraid because the dinosaurs were her friends. Suzy was out walking in Dinosaur Land one day looking for some berries. She met a new dinosaur and he told her his name was Max. Max looked about her age and he could talk. He was a small light brown Brachiosaurus with beautiful brown eyes. He was going for a walk in the woods to find something to eat too. She said, "My name is Suzy. Where do you live?" “I live down this road in a cave,” said Max. Max's parents came walking down the road. Suzy says, "There are two big dinosaurs! We had better run." He said, "Don't worry, they're my family." "Hi, I am Max's father," said his dad. He was a large brown Brachiosaurus with a long neck. "Hi, I am Max's mother," said his mom. She was a lighter brown Brachiosaurus with kind eyes. "My name is Suzy. It’s nice to meet you. I’m on my way to find something to eat," said Suzy. It was getting dark and Suzy knew she should go back to her home before sunset. "SORRY, I have to go now," said Suzy. "Ok, we should go too," said his parents. She walked back towards her home and suddenly she heard someone shout, "There she is." Her dinosaur friends said, "Can you come with us? We have a surprise for you." "Ok, but why?" she asked. When Suzy went with them they took her to her parents. She couldn’t believe it. She thought she would never see them again. They were so glad to see her they hugged her for a long time. They explained that they had been in Dinosaur Land all along but on the other side of the land. They had never stopped looking for her. They were together as a family once again. Suzy, her parents, and her dinosaur friends spent many years together in Dinosaur Land. |
| Butterfly Friends |
Once there was a little butterfly named, Sheila. Sheila was a red and orange butterfly with black spots on her wings. While she was out flying around in the fields she met a boy butterfly, named Billy. Billy was yellow and red with large wing trimmed with black. They were just about to sip the nectar out of the same flower. Sheila said, “Excuse me I didn’t see you there.” Billy said, “It’s my fault I wasn’t looking where I was going. Help yourself to the flower and I’ll visit the next one.” Sheila thought that was nice of Billy and she told him so. They flew off together. As they were out flying, they met a poor butterfly that had no place to live. She said her name was Sandy. Sandy was a small white butterfly with light blue spots on her wings. Sheila and Billy said, "You can live with us." Sandy said, "Thank you, I have never had a friend before." They asked Sandy if she was hungry. "Yes," she sighed. They flew off together to find something to eat. They flew over some beautiful fields of flowers and sparkling water. When they got tired of flying they came down for some more nectar in a garden of lilies. "Oh, look a spider web! Don’t get in it," said Billy. Sandy said, "I won't because I'm careful but thanks for the warning." Suddenly as Billy was turned around his wing got caught in the web. Sandy and Sheila tried to pull his wing out of the web to save him. They had to use their feet to tear the web and wings to flap for pulling out of the sticky web. They were able to get Billy's wing out. They got him out just before the spider got home. "Let's go home to bed,” said Billy, “we have had enough adventure for one day. We also made a new friend.” When they got back to their butterfly home they were full of nectar and decided to rest. They talked about their day together. Billy thanked the girl butterflies for saving him from the spider. Sandy, Billy and Sheila made plans for tomorrow. They had a good night together. |
