Tenth Generation
768. Joseph DOW
was born on October 20, 1663 in Hampton, NH. He died on February
6, 1734/35 in Seabrook, NH. As a young man, Joseph was sgt. of militia
and saw considerable Indian fighting. He made a rather brilliant marriage to
one of the 12 children of Lieut. Philip Challis of Amesbury, MA. This dau.,
Mary, joined the Friends. Joseph continued a Quaker after his second marriage,
although laxly. This second marriage was to Hannah, a child of Indian parents,
who was taken, with full permission of her parents, and reared by a Seabrook
Quaker family as a Christian. This marriage is the only recorded mixed marriage
in Seabrook.
It is now known that Joseph lived in his Seabrook home until his death in 1734.
His farm was near those of his brothers Jeremiah and Henry, the three being parts
of a single property owned by their father. It was Joseph who first spied the
Indians in the great raid of 17 AUG 1703, and ran to give the alarm to the nearest
blockhouse. While this raid was engineered by the French Government of Canada,
it is worthy of note that Joseph's family did not suffer from it. Perhaps this
was due to Joseph's Indian wife.
