Eleventh Generation
1920. Christopher
MITCHELL was born about 1639. He died in April 1688 in Kittery,
ME. Christopher is mentioned in court records May 21, 1660. His
house was at the head of Braveboat Harbor which is located in the town of Kittery.
C.M. administered the estate of his brother-in-law, John Searle, in 1675. C.M.'s
widow, Sarah, was administratrix of his estate. According to one source, John
Searle (______ - 1675/6) m. Joanna Andrews, presumably Sarah's sister. It will
be noted that C.M.'s first dau. was named Joanna. Another source (Descendants
of Edward Small*) gives Chris a sister, Katherine, who married John Searle.
Also Torrey records marriage of Katherine Mitchell to Thomas Warner who died
in 1660, and she remarried John Searle 11/26/1661. Thomas and Katherine had
one son, b. in 1658. Thomas was of Cape Porpoise. Maybe both are correct, and
that Joanna Andrews died and John remarried, this time to Katherine (Mitchell)
Warner. They lived in Boston where 3 children were born: Elizabeth, b.10/19/1662
and d.6/8/1664; John, b.11/19/1664; and Ebenezer, b.3/6/1666. In 1668, John
was living in Dover, NH where he drowned in 1675.
Christopher's ancestry is not known. If it is assumed that he was born about
the same time as his wife, he might possibly be the son of Paul Mitchell (see
notes on other early Mitchells listed in R-2094) who lived with his wife on Richmond's
Island, off the coast near Saco, ME in 1639. Paul died in Boston 18 SEP 1653.
There is a tradition in Freeport among Mitchell families who are descendants
of Christopher that he came to this country bearing the name Beckwith and was
adopted by a Mitchell family. There are other Mitchells who possibly were brothers
of Chris: (1) William of Newbury who married, 6 NOV 1648, Mary Sawyer. This
Wm. died in Newbury 6 JUL 1654, leaving 4 children: Mary, b. 8/31/1649; John,
b. 5/21/1651; William, b. 3/1/1653; and Elizabeth, b. 3/15/1655 (after father's
death); (2) Capt. John Mitchell who married Sarah Gunnison in 1660 and owned
property on Smuttynose Island. John died about 1664, leaving no children. John
was Sarah's third husband; after his death, she married again, to Francis Morgan,
and was living in 1673.
The repetition of the names John and William for generations among the descendants
of Christopher indicates that the above-suggested relationship may, in fact,
be the case.
To try to sort this out:
NAME BORN MARRIED DIED
Paul bef. 1639 1654
Capt. John 2d, abt 1660 1663
Willian (Newbury) 1648 1654
Christopher bef. 1665 1688
There are no specific DOB data for children of Christopher. The order shown
is speculative. Some sources (Small) and "Old Kittery" show only 6
children, William, Christopher, Richard, Joseph, Robert and Elizabeth. At the
time of his death (1688), it is reported that "his six children were then
nearly all under age." The children shown herein are those listed in the
Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire; Noyes et al., 1976, and in
the order therein indicated, although there are inconsistencies.

and Sarah ANDREWS were married before 1662 in Kittery, ME. 1921.
Sarah ANDREWS was born about
1641. She died in November 1732 in Kittery, ME. She was
christened. Sarah was dau. of John and Joan Andrews. John was b.
1600 and d. 1671. He settled in Kittery in 1640. His children have been listed
as follows: John, m. Margaret ______, He d. before 1694. Sarah, b. 1641,
m. Christopher Mitchell. Joanna, mentioned in 1653. Ann, m. John Billings.
Elizabeth, m. Thomas Mannering. Children were:
| i. | John MITCHELL died before 1743 in Kittery,
ME. He was born in Kittery, ME. Owned property at Braveboat
Harbor.
Apparently, John died early, leaving one or more children. His heirs, in 1733,
received a double portion of the Braveboat Harbor land, while the old houses,
the barn and gridiron went to his heirs and those of his sister, Sarah Pierce.
One child, possibly, was a Christopher Mitchell who married, 1 Dec 1715, an
Ellinor Larabee of Kittery. Chris bought land in Falmouth in 1726, and was living
there with her in 1748 and later. Chris is described as a cordwainer in Falmouth.
Other sources show the husband of Ellinor Larabee as Christopher (RIN-2137).
However, R-2137 is stated to have had an earlier wife, one Sarah (and his second),
but his will designates his surviving wife as Sarah. Thus, the above alternative,
if found to be correct, could clarify the confusion re 2137. That is the assumption
for this compilation. | 960 | ii. | William MITCHELL. | | iii. | Christopher MITCHELL
Jr. was born about 1665 in Kittery, ME. He died in 1743 in Kittery,
ME. He was christened. Some sources (Small) and "Old
Kittery" allege that Christopher had 3, or even 4, wives. His first was,
clearly, Mary Brackett, and the second was Sarah. They also attributed to his
as wife Eleanor Larrabee. Then, since his will refers to his wife as Sarah,
they postulate a fourth of that name.
On the other hand, the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire states
that Christopher and Eleanor (Larrabee) Mitchell were living in Falmouth in 1748
and later, whereas Christopher (R-2137) died in 1743. In addition, Falmouth
birth records show a child born to Christopher and Eleanor there in 1728. Christopher
bought property in Falmouth in 1726.
On the basis of the above, this compilation accepts that the husband of Eleanor
is not R-2137, and, thus, there is no need to postulate a fourth wife. The more
likely situation, suggested as possible in the G.D. of ME & NH and used in
this compilation is that Eleanor's husband, who is also stated to be a grandson
of Christopher (R-2134), is the son of R-2134's eldest son, John (R-2198). | | iv. | Joanna MITCHELL. | | v. | Sarah MITCHELL
was born in Kittery, ME. | | vi. | Samuel MITCHELL died in 1693. He was born
in Kittery, ME. He was christened. Samuel, according
to the Gen. Dict. of Me & NH which considers it likely that he was the husband
of Rachel, who died in 1693, leaving 3 small children. It reports that he was
represented by his heirs in 1733. Yet Samuel, son of Sarah, was listed among
her heirs when she died in 1732. | | vii. | Robert MITCHELL was born about 1669 in
Kittery, ME. He died before May 11, 1731 in Kittery, ME.
He was christened. A mariner in his early years, a tavern keeper
later. In 1693, he was master of Pepperell's bark MARY. In Portsmouth in 1702,
he was master of sloop SUCCESS.
One source says he moved to Falmouth. | | viii. | Richard MITCHELL was born about 1671
in Kittery, ME. He died about 1756. He was christened.
Son Joseph was made administrator of Richard's estate 12 Jul 1756. Some sources
list an additional child, Hannah. However, it appears from other information
that she is the same person as Joanna.
