Passengers arriving in NY in 1831 (actually 1820 - 1846) are indexed in Archives records. No record of this William Brennan was found there. The same is true for his 2 sons, John J. and James, whose naturalization records state that they also arrived in 1831.

A William Brennan family is included in the NJ 1840 Census, Bergen Cty. Roll 247, p.108.
It shows: Age Range 15-20 20-30 30-40 40-50

Males 1 3 1 1

What is known of the family of R-235 is not well described in this list.

William is listed as a machinist, as is son James. Another William Brennan, also a machinist, appears in the 1860 and 1870 Censuses for Providence; a number of items in his family suggest that he is the son of William. Pending further information, he is herein assumed to be such. William BRENNAN and Rose Ann BULGER were married.

43. Rose Ann BULGER was born about 1785 in Ireland. NOTES No data are available on Rose's DOB. However, since her children were born between about 1810 and 1825, and since her husband was born abt. 1782, her DOB is estimated as abt. 1785. It appears then that she could fall in the same family as other Bulgers listed herein on the basis of that assumption, including birthplace in Ireland.

Another Bulger of about the same age is listed for Dorchester, MA. (Norfolk Co.) in the 1850 Census:

William 60 Laborer Ireland

Margaret 54 "

James 25 Painter New Brunswick
Nicholas 18 Carpenter MA

John 15 Student
" However, without the connection to RI, his relation to Rose's family has not been assumed. Children were:

William BRENNAN was born in August 1816 in Dublin, Ireland. He was naturalized on March 26, 1870 in Providence, RI. No family information was available in considerating whether this William was a member of the family of William Brennan (R-235). However, the fact that he is described as a machinist, as is the case for R-235 and R-272, the similarity of given names in the family, the place of birth, and the dates applicable all argue that he was the son of R-235. Thus, he is taken for such pending further information.

Date and place of birth taken as that cited in Naturalization Record. He was granted citizenship 3/26/1870 at the U.S. District Court at Providence, Case No.: (P) D1022. Witnesses were John Hackett and Michael Caulfield.

*Place not mentioned, but presumably is NY since he seems to have come with father.

One of the witnesses for James was his father, William Brennan; the second was Stephen Bush. Bush's statement indicates that James came to reside in Providence abt. 1845. The 1870 Census record lists the Bush family on the same page as the James Brennan family, implying that they were neighbors. It also seems clear that a member of the Bush family married one of the Brennan girls. CENSUS DATA 1850 - Providence, RI; Ward 1, Roll 844, p.26
