Europe (Complete)

In this unit students will explore political, enviornmental, and economic systems of Europe. 
 

Sample Standards:

 

SS6G9 The student will discuss environmental issues in Europe.

a. Explain the major concerns of Europeans regarding the issues such as acid rain in Germany, air pollution in the United Kingdom, and the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

SS6E5 The student will analyze different economic systems. a. Compare how traditional, command, and market economies answer the economic questions of 1 – what to produce, 2 – how to produce, and 3- for whom to produce. b. Explain how most countries have a mixed economy located on a continuum between pure and market and pure command. c. Compare the basic types of economic systems found in United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia.

                          Canada  

 

    This unit will focus on modern Canada. Conflict and change will be studied as students analyze Quebec’s independence movement. The theme of culture will be examined as students describe the influence of the French and English on the languages and religions of Canada. The theme of governance will be a unit focus as students determine the system of government found in Canada

The Stock Market Game (Complete)

6th grade students will study the basics of our American Economy by participating the the Georgia

 Stock Market Game. This simulation is sponsored by the Georgia Council on Economic Education.

Essential Questions:

   
1. What is the Stock Market and how does it operate?

    2. How does the Market affect our economy?

All 6th graders are in a Stock Market Group. They can access their accounts from: smg2000.org

 

 

 

GRADING SYSTEM-  Advanced Content Social Studies classwork and projects are to be done in class. Exceptions can be made with teacher permission.

Classwork and Participation - 40%           

Tests/ Quizzes – 30%

Projects- 30%

 

Required Materials: Three ring binder ( no spiral notebooks), standard notebook paper, pencil, and pen (blue or black ink only please)

Extra Credit Work is not given in this class so it is imperative that all work be completed.

 

Advanced Content Program: The curriculum and instructional strategies for this course are differentiated in content, pacing, process skills emphasis, and expectation of student outcomes from the regular Social Studies course. Curriculum content has been designed for mastery and extension, of state and district content standards. The course is appropriate for students who have high achievement and interest in Social Studies. The district has established criteria and guidelines that identify these students. Students are placed in this class according to specified indicators of demonstrated exceptional ability and motivation. Students must meet continuation criteria to remain in this class. (80% average)

The syllabus is subject to change in order to accommodate classes that need additional or less time on a chapter. Changes may also be made in accordance to Cobb County and National Testing Schedules. Classes will be notified when changes are made in the syllabus.
