This is a table of Shaker Box dimensions. It is posted here with the author's permission. It is a copyright of John Wilson of

He teaches a weekend course on Shaker boxmaking and sells boxmaking supplies. He's a great teacher. Not only is he good at explaining how to do things, he's good at showing how to fix mistakes.

I have proofread this table, but any errors in it are almost certainly mine and not John Wilson's. This is the revised version.

Note: This table is much easier to read if your browser window is wide enough to get all the dimensions for a row on a single line. Do you know how to force this behavior in a table? Let me know.

* A factor of the actual size of the band thickness you select. The #1 tack = 3/16, #1 1/2 = 7/32, #2 = 1/4, #2 1/4 = 9/32, #2 1/2 = 5/16, and #3 = 11/32.

** Use 3/64 pilot hole for #1, #1 1/2, and #2 copper tacks and 1/16 for #2 1/2 and #3.

*** Actual band length from the tack line to tacked location on lap end. Mark this length on band before wetting as an aid in accurate sizing of oval.. Elipse circumference ( pi ((A+B) / 2)K, where K = 1 for an elipse of this proportion) is smaller by 1 5/8 for the sizes above #8
