BC is located just beyond the terminus of the Rongbuk Glacier which flows north from Everest. It covers a large area and is actually a collection of camps. All North Side expedition teams start here. They will stay at BC 4 to 6 days to acclimatize to altitude and repack gear for the trip to Advance Base Camp. At BC all climbers will participate in a Budhist Puja asking Everest's permission to be climbed. The Sherpas will not climb without a Puja.
