The North Col, Camp 1, is the first of three high camps. On the low point of the North Ridge it is exposed to high winds. Temperatures can drop to well below zero Fahrenheit with wind chills to -40F. Climbers overnight here before moving up the Ridge. The area is usually snow covered, however, this year there is less snow than normal.
