The Big Sioux Cat Fanciers club started around 1975 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was the first cat club of any kind in Sioux Falls. The club held annual cat shows at the Ramkota Hotel in Sioux Falls and at the fairgrounds. A typical show included 170-175 purebred cats, with five rings each day. The club also held standalone household pet shows, at which 60-65 household pets competed in one ring. The club's last show before becoming inactive was held in July, 1989.

The club charter was reactivated in April, 2000. Club meetings are held at PetCo in Sioux Falls. There are no regular meeting dates; in general, each meeting's business includes scheduling the next meeting.

Our First ACFA Cat Show in the New Millennium

One of the reactivated club's first major activites was hosting the American Cat Fanciers Association 2000 Annual. The annual was held at the Oaks Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls, with the theme "Moo-ving Into the Future".

The weekend show, August 19th and 20th, was preceded by four days of meetings, seminars, and other special events. In keeping with the bovine theme, black bicolor or black harlequin entries had a reduced rate for the show, and Rorschach, Norma Anderson's black-and-white household pet (and the reigning ACFA #1 household pet) greeted show attendees.

Among the special events was "An Evening with the Australian Cat Fancy", held Thursday evening, featuring international guest judge Margaret Robertson of Australia. Attendees at this event were also treated to a performance by the Moo Sisters and Farmer Don, who led the audience in singing "Waltzing Moo-tilda".

The 2002 Big Sioux Cat Show

One hundred cats competed in the club's 2002 show, held at the Brookings Convention Center, July 20 and 21. The show theme was "Great Faces, Great Places", so the flyers and the show catalog's cover and dividers emphasized great places in South Dakota and great faces of cats of all ages and types. The walls of the the show hall were covered with posters of all cat breeds, and the ring backdrops were decorated with the names of United States presidents and their cats. In addition to exhibitors, about 300 people attended the show. Click here to see pictures and other information from the show.

The 2003 Big Sioux Cat Show

The club's 2003 show was held at the Oaks Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls, September 27 and 28. The show theme was "Fall for Cats," emphasizing the change of show dates. The flyers and the show catalog's cover featured cats lounging around the famous Sioux Falls. This show included ACFA's first Junior ACFA ring. Click here to see information from the show.

The club's 2004 show was held at the Oaks Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls, October 30and 31. The show theme was "Halloween Cat Show," and it included a Feline Halloween Costume Contest.
