What
shall I say? I like computers and supervise a group of people
who administer computer networks at my workplace. I've setup
a network at home, just to keep me up on the technology, and am fortunate
to have access to a cable modem, which stays up 24/7, and reportedly can
reach speeds beyond a T1 (ie., > 1.5Mbit/sec). Having that
technology, I've made it a point to learn how to build (and now have in
place) a proxy/masquerading server and firewall.
Aside from the
computer as a vocation and hobby, I also maintain tropical freshwater fish
(some Tiger Barbs, a catfish, and a West African Ropefish) and saltwater
fish (a baby Red Volitans Lionfish named "Spot" in one tank and a Clownfish
("Frazier"), Blue Damsel ("Moe"), and Striped Damsel ("Bandit"), in another),
as well as a couple of comets, who live in my half-barrel water garden.
Other expensive (ugh!) hobbies include my audiophile-grade home theater
and my container shrub garden. And the hobbies (like Star Trek
and Star Wars fandom) go on and on...
As a side note
to my computing, I've only recently begun using the Linux operating system
in earnest as my desktop operating system, and have found its stability
to be a blessing! I'm hoping that the info on my site will
encourage others to seek out the alternatives in the OS world as all too
often, too much of a "good thing" (or in the case of the predominate operating
system, a "bad thing") is not healthy!
I'm not going to
lie to you and say it's been a cakewalk learning a new OS, but the time
saved from reinstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting, that other
OS has been put to good use to learn a new one! And to those
who tell you that "there are no applications for Linux", let me
just say that I'm editing the HTML code for this site using a program called
"Kedit" (one of the KDE Window manager's text editors), and I modified
the gif image headers from the templates that I'm using, with the world-renowned
graphics program called "The GIMP", while having my POP mail and a couple
of instances of Netscape 4.7 minimized to check my progress, AND while
having my "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" CD playing. All of
this is running on the SuSE 6.1 distribution of Linux! And
what's the best part? Linux is FREE and supported by programmers
from all over the world!
