KINMONTH Family

Welcome to the Kinmonth Family genealogy page. Your host is Bruce
Kinmonth. The surname Kinmonth is fairly rare, and often misspelled. The
usual misspelling is "Kinmouth", although I have also seen Kinmoth, Kenmonth,
Kenmouth and Kenmoth. While I have often seen "Kinmouth", I have never seen
an instance where it was not a misspelling of Kinmonth. (i.e. I know of no
instances where the correct spelling of a person's surname really is "Kinmouth").
The name, while present in England and Ireland, probably originated in Scotland, where
it appears geographically several times:
- There is a locality called Upper Kinmonth somewhat southwest of Stonehaven,
and just north of Drumlithie. This is supposed to be the birthplace of the poet Robert Burns' father and
grandfather (see Robert
Burns Family History).
Upper Kinmonth is actually part of a cluster of localities which also
include East Kinmonth, Mid Kinmonth and West Kinmonth.

- There are also the localities of Kinmonth and Mains of
Kinmonth some 7 or 8 kilometers southeast of Perth, just on the north
side of the River Earn. They are also slightly east of Dunning and Forteviot,
two other places that figure prominently in Kinmonth ancestry. View a map
here: Kinmonth near Perth View a

of Kinmonth (photo credit: Rob Burke). There are quite a few other places near Perth that begin
with the syllable "Kin", so it must have meant something in the old speech.
Some are: Kinross, Kintillo, Kinfauns, Kinrossie, Kinnaird, Kinnoull,
Kinnesswood and Kinloch.
