Welcome to

Newsletter of the 316th Fighter Squadron Foundation

In the early months of 1943 somewhere in the Western desert area of North Africa, the first newsletter for the 316th Fighter Squadron was being composed. Titled "Hell's Belles Tells", it served as both a source of information and entertainment to the men. The editor, Irwin Frank, had a knack for turning a phrase, and what began as a flyer on a bullitin board was soon to become much more. Touted by "Stars and Stripes" for it's great variety and skilled artwork, HBT was a much sought after read.

A second publication titled "324th Fighter Group News" ran during 1944. It combined news of the group's members with Cpl. John L. Modic, of the 314th Squadron as editor, Cpl. George Cohen of our own 316th as Art Editor, and Cpl. Randall Herman of the 315th as Reporter.

After the War, (sometime in the mid-1970's) George Cohen began a small newsletter entitled "The 316th Fighter Squadron News" and served as editor. He went on in 1984 to produce the present day "FlightLines" with the assistance of contributing editor Wesley Moore.

Today's "FlightLines" is a valuable conduit to the past and present activities of the 316th's members. From time to time the men will share a tale with our readers about the squadron life they knew. Perhaps it's in the telling, rather than the tale itself, that we find a pathway back. Back to a place where only words can now fuel the flames of imagination.

With new generations now looking to their past for direction, we find our audience is expanding. We have therefore taken to the Internet in an effort to broaden our reach. It is our sincere wish that you will find a sense of pride in the efforts of our servicemen who fought so bravely under the protection of their flaming Belle from Hell. A symbol of their fierce loyalty to God and Country, she now lights the way in memory to their most shinning hour.
