Stanley Plane Restoration (click pics for larger view)
| My grandfather's Stanley # 7C jointer plane
This is how the plane looked when it arrived from my parents. The tote had been re-glued by my mother before shipping. I later replaced it with one from here (no longer in business). |
Stanley #7c, Type 8 - apart
Here are all the pieces, before restoration. You can see the original japanning at the tote and knob mounting points. I used electrolysis to revive it. |
| Stanley #7C, restored
Here you can see the surface rust has been removed, and the japanning is restored - I used Rustoleum primer and gloss enamel. Modern asphaltum paint is available, but I didn't bother. The new surface was soft (easily scratched) when I finished, but it seems to have hardened quite a bit over the next few weeks. |
Stanley #7C, Type 8
Here is another shot of the restored plane. You can see some of the residual pitting that remains. All in all, it was well worth the effort, as I now have a nice, functional Type 8 jointer plane and a family heirloom, in one. |
We have a family of spiders living under our balcony in the back of the house. Alicia took a picture, so if anyone out there can identify it, we'd be most appreciative; we suspect it is from the Araneidae (Orb weaver) family. This picture is of the presumptive progenitor of the rest.
