Hawa Sabally is my Gambian brother. He is a 44-year old man who graciously accepted me as an intimate member of his family. We shared a connection that is inexplicable, and is exemplified by his smile, voice, and compassionate energy.
Hawa was my guardian. He protected me from cultural misunderstandings, and cared for me like it was his sole purpose. Our differences dissolved the moment we met, and our relationship developed deeper than I could have imagined. It's Hawa whose energy stirs within me to this day, and fuels my heart to help him as he so selflessly helped me.
