The Eagles have become a different football team after their loss to the Steelers. The specter of the Eagles Defense that was used as a doormat by the Steelers running game has been vanquished. The promotion of Trotter to the starting MIKE position has changed the attitude of the entire Football Team.
The Trotter comeback is amazing. A transforming presence on the field, he played at a level that earned a Pro-Bowl selection even though he was not a starter for half of the season. Trotter brings a level of play and a tenacity to the Eagles that are reminiscent of when the NFC East Division set the standard for NFL Defenses.
Andy Reid has learned that different personalities are best suited for different positions. A Team composed of cookie-cutter Andy Reid-types results in a Team that is monotone. You need one type at MIKE and another type at WR.
Terrell Owens on the other side of the ball also has an impact on the Offense that has surpassed his performance on the field. At first, there were many, including myself, who questioned whether Owens would be an asset or whether his personal peccadilloes would prove to be a liability to the Team. There were questions as to what would happen when McNabb is spreading the ball around and not focusing on getting Owens the ball. When that did occur, there wasn’t even a peep. Instead, you heard remarks from Owens who spoke about winning and what was best for the team.
The work ethic of an athlete who zealously cares for his conditioning and who is currently working feverishly to rehabilitate his ankle offers testimony to his character. Although Owens is definitely a prima donna, the encouragement that he provides McNabb and his Teammates reveals his own style of leadership. Owens, whether he is playing or not, has contributed a much needed confidence and swagger that have become contagious.
