Congratulations Pats! Thanks for reminding the Philadelphia Fans what an
NFL Passing Game can do against two weak Cornerbacks. In the aftermath
of a devastatingly disappointing Eagles' offensive performance against
the one and only Terrell Owens - T.O..
Would T.O. be a problem for defenses? Yes.
Would Cornerbacks be so eager to jump the routes or to send the kitchen sink
at McNabb? No. His presence would give defenses problems that they would
need to solve.
So should we clamor for T.O.? No. But we should expect a playmaker at WR.
Why do we need a playmaker at WR when everyone knows the Eagles like to
spread the ball around? As the Eagles have demonstrated, they can't spread
the ball around if the Receivers can't catch the ball. The Offense has no
excuses. Unlike the Defense, the Offense was not decimated by injuries. Only
Westbrook was injured and, although Westbrook is definitely a playmaker, the
Eagles had 2 other capable RBs available. The blame has nowhere else to go
except to the Receivers and the Coach.
So, why not T.O.? He is 30 and, despite what he says, will not be satisfied with
pulling in 4 or 5 passes a game.
The new WR Model is large and fast. Teams have effectively deployed WR
tandems where one is fast and can go deep and one is large and can
outmuscle the Secondary. Free Agent Darrell Jackson would be a day one
upgrade. Combine Darrell Jackson with one of the deep WR talents in the 1st
or 2nd Rounds of the draft and as long as the Eagles draft well the WR problem
should be solved.
It would take a WR about 3 years to become acclimated to the Eagles' offense.
But, a new draft pick could be eased into the Job with Pinkston and Mitchell
around. Also, McMullen is a large, strong receiver drafted last year in the 3rd
Round. The Eagles could gamble and hope that he overcomes last year's
bout with Rock Hands.
One more question. How important is the Draft? Darrell Jackson was drafted
the same year as Pinkston. The Eagles drafted Pinkston in the 2000 Draft in
the 2nd Round.
