04/28/04A review of the 1st Rd draft pick (16th overall) would yield no qualms regarding whether Shawn Andrews is a very good Guard or not. But when we look at the how the Front Office managed the changing of the Guards, it looks like the Eagles once again came out of this maneuver with a net minus.
Although the Front Office has denied that the selection of Shawn Andrews was influenced by John Welbourn’s demand for a new contract or a trade, it would be a tremendous coincidence if one were to give them the benefit of the doubt. The bottom-line is this:
OUTGOING INCOMING

John Welbourn |
Shawn Andrews |

1st Rd Draft Selection 2004 |
5th Rd Draft Selection 2004 |

2nd Rd Draft Selection 2004 |
3rd or 4th Rd Draft selection 2005 |

Shawn Andrews will be initially used as a Guard and will be allowed to challenge Hicks and Mayberry for playing time. Shawn Andrews, if the Eagles are lucky, will play as well as John Welbourn in a year or two. Those who think that he is going to step-in and dominate in the NFL in his 1st year do not understand the game of Football.
The bottom-line is that we have changed players at a position where the hope is that one day we may get an upgrade in the level of play. At the same time, we have gained a 5th and a 3rd (possibly a 4th if playing time contingencies are not met) and lost 1st and 2nd rd draft selections.
The imbalance is obviously a Net Loss of what I would call Eagle Assets. With the exception of this year’s Free Agency, the previous 2 years have been examples of where the Eagles have experienced a net loss of team talent because the value of outgoing players exceeded the value of incoming players. The Eagles, although they are doing a wonderful job with the salary cap, are continuing to mismanage the flow of talent and assets to their detriment.
