The Immigration Bill is Unsalvageable 05/30/2007

The Immigration Bill’s focus is the status of current illegal aliens and discounts mitigation of ongoing illegal immigration.  This emphasis has made this legislation unsalvageable.

Legislation which addresses the disposition of the current illegal population must be deferred until the Federal Government can guarantee the integrity of its borders.  Otherwise, a benevolent provision of a version of amnesty will elicit a flood of new illegals eager to be the beneficiaries of such magnanimity.

This Immigration Bill fundamentally contradicts the rule of law.  One of the Federal Government’s primary mandates is to secure the National Defense.  Federal inability to prevent violation of its borders, whether due to incompetence or unconcern, is a betrayal of the goodwill of its citizenry and a disregard for their security.  Of the six terrorists apprehended prior to perpetrating their attack on Fort Dix, two maintained illegal status and would have been granted amnesty by the Democrats and their misguided allies in the Republican Party.

This legislation takes an upside-down view of the illegal immigration problem.  The concern of the Democrats is to promote violation of the law by encouraging illegal immigration.  There is no population more prone to being dependent upon big government.  Republican advocates do not want to alienate potential voters and citizens who share the same origins.   There is also a desire to maintain the status quo for American employers who enjoy lower wages as the fruit of illegal immigration.  The fact that these lower wages stem from an illegal activity seems to be of minimal concern.

Whether the motivation is a political party’s endeavor to augment its voting base or pandering to cheap labor proponents, this Immigration Bill will encourage more violation of our borders despite the preferences of Americans and at the expense of taxpayers and national security.

America is an open society but it should not be a vulnerable one.  At home, we keep our doors locked and we only invite in whom we please.
