Bowie Senior Chorale’s Spring Concert Features Decades of Dance
The Bowie Senior Chorale is throwing a dance party! From the Charleston to swing, disco and rock, the spring concert will showcase the most popular dances of each decade from the 1920s to the present. Craig Sparks, the Chorale director, promises that everyone will “have a good time” at the spring concert. He has carefully planned the program to include a dance from every decade of the past century. His aim is to bring down the house with songs that everyone will recognize. People will recall their senior prom or dancing with their special someone as the Chorale sings all of the popular dances of the past century.
The Charleston kicks off the party, literally. Duke Ellington and Louis Prima unite for a swing favorite. Then, it’s as if John Travolta is in the room as the Chorale performs a disco medley beginning with “Staying Alive.” If you watched American Bandstand as a teen, you’ll enjoy “Bandstand Boogie.” Everyone is “Footloose” and will appreciate the appeal of “Dance to the Music.” “Twist and Shout” asks you to “shake it up, baby” and “when marimba rhythms start to play” you will “Sway.” Rounding out the program is Madonna’s “Vogue,” “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, and the sentimental “I Hope you Dance.” The dazzling, hard-driving accompaniment of Paula Sparks adds to the enjoyment of each song and the 110-members chorale rehearses for weeks before the concert to deliver an awesome performance.
There are two concert dates: 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 14, at the Bowie Senior Center, 14900 Health Center Drive, Bowie, MD 20716, (tickets are $2 or donate a non-perishable food item for the Bowie Food Pantry) and 7:30 pm, Wednesday, May 20, at the Bowie Center for Performing Arts, 15200 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715 (tickets are $6).
