Bowie Senior Chorale’s Spring Concert
Decades of Dance

The "Happy" Ensemble
Loretta Bast, Patte Sweeney, Lee Johnson, Jean Tidwell, Marg Bond, Beatrice Youngblood

The Bowie Senior Chorale threw a dance party! From the Charleston to swing, disco and rock, the spring concert was a showcase of the most popular dances of each decade from the 1920s to the present. Craig Sparks carefully planned the program to include a dance from every decade of the past century. His aim was to bring down the house with songs that everyone recognized. The audience recalled their senior prom or dancing with their special someone as the Chorale performed.

The Charleston kicked off the party, literally. Duke Ellington and Louis Prima unite for a swing favorite. Then, it was as if John Travolta was in the room as the Chorale performed a disco medley beginning with “Staying Alive.” Everyone who watched American Bandstand as a teen enjoyed “Bandstand Boogie.” Everyone was “Footloose” and appreciated “Dance to the Music.” “Twist and Shout” asked the audience to “shake it up, baby” and “when marimba rhythms start to play” made the crowd start to “Sway.” Rounding out the program was Madonna’s “Vogue,” “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, and the sentimental “I Hope you Dance.” The dazzling, hard-driving accompaniment of Paula Sparks added to the enjoyment of each song. The 110-members chorale rehearsed for weeks before the concert to deliver this awesome performance.

There were two concert dates: 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 14, at the Bowie Senior Center and 7:30 pm, Wednesday, May 20, at the Bowie Center for Performing Arts. Both concerts were sold out.
