The Bowzies folk group is a union of three musicians who have been performing Celtic folk music in the Detroit metro area for many years.

Gerard Smith, a native Detroiter, moved north with his family at an early age to the township of Emmett, a community located in the “thumb” of Michigan, named for Irish patriot Robert Emmett. While Gerard’s musical tastes embraced many styles from hardcore, jazz and rock to classical, he began to assemble his repertoire of Irish ballads and tunes in 1992. Gerard sings and plays electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, bodhran and concertina. His most recent recording is a solo album Hamtramck: Heaven.

The term “bowzie” refers to a part of a sailing ship’s mast rigging. It is also Dublin slang for a young good-for-nothing person. Any resemblance between these items and the members of the band is purely coincidental.
