Citizen Action New Mexico task?
More U.S. coal-waste disposal sites than previously known have contaminated water with toxic metals, according to a survey by an environmental coalition that says the data are limited and only hint at the scope of the problem.
The study said that "large coal ash-generating states like Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico and Tennessee, to name a few, require no monitoring by law at coal ash ponds, at least while they are still in operation."

The 995-megawatt Cholla Power Plant is located in northeastern
Arizona near Holbrook. APS operates the plant and owns Units 1, 2 and 3,
which are capable of producing 615 megawatts of electricity. PacifiCorp (PAC)
owns the 380-megawatt Unit 4 - the largest unit at the plant.

Cholla is fueled by coal from the McKinley Mine in New Mexico.
For years, everyone has known the McKinley Mine's days were numbered.
After two layoffs in the last five years as the mine exhausted its leased coal reserves, officials of the mining operation just east of Window Rock have announced that mining operations will stop altogether at the end of 2009.

Conductor Mark gave our rail car passengers a lecture on his solar home.
Harlan Mark Vale
Mark told us he uses both solar and wind generated electricity.
Golf cart storage batteries are used to store electricity, he reported. Inverter is used to convert the DC to AC.
Mark told us that the electric output of the solar and wind systems was measured in watts.
Not watt seconds or hours or kilowatt hours.
But Mark is liberal arts educated.
My formal music training began at The Evergreen State College in Washington State in the 70s, where I studied electronic music and audio engineering.
Mark showed the passengers a digital photo on a camera of their solar bedroom.
Bill told mark about 1 kWh = 3413 BTU. Mark wrote this number on a napkin.
Mark told the passengers his other job, while the train was in the Grand Canyon station, was to play the piano at the Bright Angel lodge.

1kWh = 3412.14163 BTU. So 92,250 * 3413 =
Heat goes in and electricity comes out. This is called the HEAT RATE.
Conversely, electricity goes in and heat comes out. 1kWh = 3412.14163 BTU.
The second law of thermodynamics tells us that more heat has to go in than comes out. If not, then one has the thermodynamic equivalent of perpetual motion.
Does the second law of thermodynamics apply to solar and wind generated electricity?
PNM Foil 6 states that it does not.
