Journal

January 2002

·  Well, we decided we’d keep a little journal going, to keep track of all the little things that happen in the family.  They may, or course, be of little consequence to the rest of the world, but it’s always possible that someone might derive some amusement from it.

·  Jessica is getting another tooth.  So far she just has one on the bottom that’s visible, but Katherine said she can feel another one right next to it.

·  Matt Bracken’s back in Ireland after a year long stay in Sydney, Australia.  We just heard that he’s got a job in Hibernian.  Congratulations Matt!

·  We’re expecting Jessica to start crawling any day now.  She’s able to lunge towards objects of interest, but hasn’t quite figured out how to use her legs for locomotion.  She does enjoy standing up though, provided someone is there to hold her.

·  You’re probably starting to notice that all the news is about Jessica.  That’s the way things are in the Bracken household at this time.  Jessica’s doc says we should start handing her little chunks of food to see if she can learn to eat with her hands.  The problem is that, while she used to put everything straight into her mouth, now she prefers to simply look at whatever she’s holding.  She can sit there for up to twenty minutes, examining the object of interest, turning it over and back with her little fingers, but without putting it near her mouth.  We’ve tried handing her pieces of potato, or banana, but she shows no interest whatever in eating them.  Instead she likes to mush the pieces in her hand, and then study the resulting mess.

·  1/23:  The lesson for today is: Never get too casual with a diaper-less baby.

·  1/24:  Tried Tropical Fruit Blend today.  Can’t say that it’s Jessica’s favorite food in the whole world.  Maybe it’s the bananas.  So far she hasn’t shown much interest in bananas.

·  Jessica is now quite an intrepid explorer.  She cannot crawl forward, so instead she needs to be looking perpendicular to the intended direction of motion.  Then she heads off through a series of rapid rolls.  When she’s bored, she rolls over to the coffee table, and browses through the magazines there.

·  Today Jessica had her first bagel, at the Babies & Bagels class.  It wasn’t an entire bagel – just a piece of one.  She enjoyed munching on it for about 45 minutes, after which it didn’t look quite as appetizing if you ask me.

·  Congratulations to Nuala!  She’s having a baby!

·  Some of those baby food jars are ridiculously difficult to open.  You’d almost need to be a strongman at a circus to open the 2.5 ounce jar of peaches.  Whatever chance Jessica has of opening a bottle of household cleaner, at least she’ll never get near the peaches!

·  1/28:  Jess was very restless last night.  She woke up every two hours demanding food.  She doesn’t actually cry when she wakes, it’s more like shouts.  There are periods of silence, punctuated by little outbursts that sound like baby-speak for “Hey!  You!”
