What the Hell is TA-50 anyway?

The "TA" in TA-50 stands for Table of Allowances.  TA-50 is the general acronym for a U.S. Army Soldier's basic field kit: helmet, pack, load-bearing equipment, canteens, and many other items deemed necessary for a particular mission, operation, or exercise.

Every Army recruit learns how to maintain and use his or her TA-50 when in Basic Combat Training, and most units issue TA-50 to each Soldier, upon assignment.

Science fiction and fantasy writers need TA-50 too: that particular knowledge set which professionals take for granted, and yet which none of us know when we start out.
