AP Chemistry

Advanced Placement Chemistry Students

I will be in school (Room 191) Tuesday, August 25 from 10 AM to 1 PM. Come in if you have any questions about the summer problems. You are not required to attend.

As we discussed at the end of the previous school year you are responsible for completing a summer assignment as part of the course. This assignment consists of a series of chemistry problems that you must solve.

These problems are based on chemistry knowledge you should have mastered in the Honors Chemistry course. The problems are presented for college freshman and may be more challenging to analyze. Remember that AP Chemistry is a college course given at the high school level.

Assignment:

Complete the following problems assigned from your textbook (Chemistry 6th Edition, Zumdahl) and hand in a solution packet showing the solutions to the problems.

  • Use 8 1/2" x 11" computer printer paper for the solution packet.

  • Do not use a folder or jacket. A cover sheet is not required.

  • Make sure your name is on each page of the solution packet you hand in.

  • Number the pages of the packet.

  • Staple the pages together.

  • Each solution must be organized, neat and descriptive. Show equations when you are required to do calculations.

  • Unit analysis (canceling of units) should  be shown in the solution equation. If you have difficulty with unit analysis at least make an attempt.

  • Turn in the solution packet at our first class meeting.

  • I will return the packet by our next class meeting for review at which time I will hand out the correct problem solutions for you to check your own work and ask questions.

  • When all questions have been answered we will schedule a date for an exam covering this material about 1 week from when we finish the above review. In the meantime we will cover lab safety and lab techniques.

  • Use the discussion group to post questions.

Problems:

All problems are taken from the Exercise section at the end of each chapter of your text.

Notation is as follows: 1.23 means chapter 1 - exercise 23

Chapter 1

1.24, 1.26, 1.28, 1.40, 1.57, 1.59, 1.66, 1.69

Chapter 2

2.27, 2.42, 2.44, 2.60, 2.66, 2.70, 2.72

Chapter 3

3.22, 3.30, 3.34, 3.44, 3.51, 3.80, 3.86, 3.94, 3.97

Scoring

The assignment will be graded based on presentation of solutions. Each solution must be organized, neat and descriptive. Credit will be given for incomplete solution attempts.

No credit will be given for calculation problems that give the answer only. You must show the equation or equations for the solution.

This assignment will count as approximately 5% of the first quarter grade.
