Thanks, Va gal, for helping us continue to debug the new Buzz. The software
seems to be working just fine, and now it's a matter of getting accounts set up
for all the regulars. And, of course, even those without regular accounts can
post comments on existing topics without having a user ID if they use the name "guest" and email "guest@bridgewaterva.com".

Subject: The New Bridgewater Buzz: testers wanted
From: webmaster--  Sat, April 19, 2008 8:02 am

Moderator Tom and I have been working on figuring out how to upgrade Bridgewater Buzz. We think we have a solution that will work well for everyone, as well as making moderation easier -- but we need to test it out. If you're willing to give it a try, please go to http://bridgewaterva.com/newbuzz and you'll find instructions at the right of the screen under New Buzz. The New Buzz will have a lot of advantages and, to be sure, a few drawbacks relative to what Tom did here on the old Buzz. However, Tom and I have become convinced that the moderation features, the search and subscription capabilities, and other nice things about the new Buzz will be worth it. So, by all means go have a look at the New Buzz -- and thanks to everyone who makes Bridgewater Buzz what it is.

Okay, is it time to begin random drug testing of high school students? You
can't single out the athlete - it would have to be all kids involved in any
extr-curricular (debate team, musical, band).

Subject: NASA Scientist to give a pre-Earth Day presentation
From: guest-bridgewaterva--  Thu, April 10, 2008 11:52 am

You are invited to hear a Bridgewater College alumnus talk about his work with satellite-based measurements of the Earth and how this information is being used to understand the Earth’s climate.

Where?
Bridgewater College, McKinney Science Center room 100

When?
7:30pm on Monday, April 21st

Title: Global measurements of Earth from space
Speaker: Robert Wolfe, NASA

Abstract: Satellites provide a unique perspective for studying the global
impact of our civilization on the Earth. Over the last decade, NASA has built
a number of advanced satellites to better understand the Earth’s land, oceans
and atmosphere as a system. Measurements from these satellites, along with
measurements from ground based instruments, weather satellites, and other
satellites, have helped us develop a better understanding of the complex
environment we live in and our impact on it. Also, advanced computer models
have allowed us to use this data to make prediction of future changes. This
talk will focus on the measurements that we are making from space and how this information is being used to develop a better understanding of the Earth’s
climate.

Short Bio: Robert Wolfe, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, has spent the last 27 years measuring the Earth from space. After
graduating from Bridgewater College, VA, in 1980, he began working with
scientists to measure the Earth's gravitational field by bouncing lasers off
satellites. He then spent a number of years building US and international
ground stations that received data from US and international Earth viewing
satellites. In the early 1990s, he began working with other scientists and
engineers to build NASA's Earth Observing System, a mission to measure the
Earth’s land, oceans and atmosphere from space with high accuracy. These
measurements, along with ground based measurements and longer term measurements from previous satellites, are a key to understanding the Earth’s climate and our impact on it.

I'm moving to town with my family. Curious about OTA TV signals and have found the buzz helpful. Wondering about pros/cons/contrasts between two antenna set-up recommended here and simply using one antenna with a rotor. All advice is welcomed. Thanks

From: mousie--  Thu, April 10, 2008 7:41 pm

if you are only going to watch tv live and not record stuff there is much to
recommend a rotator. no complicated rigging of splitters and combiners. and the new televisions are good at getting a perfect digital signal even when the
antenna is not exactly pointing toward the station. tv sets are way better than
they used to be. but if you want to record stuff you need the two antenna setup
with combiners. for example. if you set up to record american idol from
richmond you may walk out and leave the antenna pointed toward tv3. thats 90
degrees off axis and you have nothing recorded when you come back. even with the newer tv sets.

Bridgewater area events calendar is still in testing but you can see it at

It isn't w/ a realtor.. I hear it is tied up w/ banks and maybe lots of legal
stuff.. everything is still in there from the Vet.. sad all that stuff is just
sitting there.. the building is also not being maintained and that is sad..
someone will have to put money into it to get it back in good condition again..
I just love the site and would love to look around inside.

It truly is a very nice place inside. I took my dogs there for years when Dr. Burgess owned it. Shortly before he sold the place, my dogs' groomer had moved her practice in there as well. But from my understanding, the new owners filed bankruptcy shortly after the purchase. So it probably is tied up in legal matters. Such a shame to see it go down so poorly. Dr. Burgess always kept it such a beautiful place, both inside and out. I enjoyed riding past there just to admire its beauty. Such a loss to our community when Dr. Burgess sold it. He was a fantastic vet! We really miss him.

Dear Mousie - hahahahaha!!! Oh, to be able to take your time and enjoy it all.  Not any more. What took me 12 years to learn, they now require in 10. The last 2 years of high school today are what were college classes 30 years ago. The kids are told that, to get into a good college, you have to excel in the academic standards, be a club leader, athlete and, by golly, you better have a part-time job, too. No wonder enrollment at BRCC is swelling.

From: New Kid -  Sun, March 16, 2008 10:59 am

Glad the comment form has been fixed.  Hadn't attempted to send any postings in past couple of weeks so didn't know it wasn't working.  But wondered why there were no new postings.  This form is certainly different but seems to be working.

Went to the Highlands Maple Festival yesterday in both McDowell and Monterey.  What crowds and traffic!  Especially enjoyed the clogging event in Monterey.  Does anyone know of any clogging events going on in or around Bridgewater?

Subject: Problem with Comment form fixed
From: Moderator--  Sat, March 15, 2008 11:50 pm

Apparently since around March 6, the Comment form ceased functioning.  I was wondering why no new Buzz postings were coming in.  Your alert Webmaster caught this malfunction and has corrected it.  Hurray for him!  However, you will notice that the Comment form appears somewhat different.  Don't let that throw you.  First of all, as the form mentions, you need not put your actual email address on the form.  You may substitute the "guest" email address provided on the from.

Secondly, although the comments box seems small, you may type as long of a posting as you wish.  The box will expand in length to accommodate your posting.  We apologize for any frustrations this has caused you in trying to submit current postings or comments.

Subject: New software, new look coming
From: webmaster--  Thu, March 06, Mo date, 2008 7:15 am

Here's a little more background on upcoming site changes for regular readers of Bridgewater Buzz: Plain and simple, Microsoft FrontPage is dying. Microsoft isn't supporting it very well and the web hosts aren't supporting it very well. When the FrontPage Extensions on the server break, it's become harder to get them restored and working. So, I'm going to a different software package and I'll take the opportunity to do some upgraded content. Thanks to everyone who suggested software, including some posters to this board. Obviously I can't take everyone's suggestions, but I do value them all. Meanwhile, Bridgewater Buzz should be unaffected by the upgrade -- please continue to contribute here. Thanks to all from your webmaster.

When the new www.bridgewaterva.com is complete, there will be new content and a new look. Unfortunately, the site will also load more slowly. (I always took pride in having a fast-loading site, even over dial-up.) The slower loading is inherent in the way that Web software is going -- based on retrieving content from little databases that store it all. There's no way that such an approach can match the speed of simple html code. Those of you with broadband connections will notice little difference. For those with dial-up service, www.bridgewaterva.com will load more slowly the first time -- but later, caching and other tricks by your browser and service provider will speed things up.

From: McGill--  Wed, March 05, 2008 9:20 pm

Read in the paper that the PEW Institute gave Virginia an A- rating for having a effective and efficient government. We tied with Utah and Washington state. This is the highest ratings in the nation. Guess the ol' government types aren't as bad as is assumed.

Subject: Mexican restaurants
From: sissy sue--  Tue, March 04, 2008 11:27 pm

I'm in a group of women (about 10) that gets together every other month on our lunch hour (Harrisonburg area). We meet at a restaurant - looking for variety, speed of service, ability to handle a large group/"privacy", and reasonable price. We've never done Mexican, but we all like it. I know that El Charro on Main will seat a larger group at lunch. They have numerous $5 lunch specials, good service and yummy free chips. Do any of you know anything about Guzman's, Jalisco, or any new restaurants that have recently opened? We meet Tuesday. THANKS!

My wife and I have enjoyed Jalisco many times over the past two years, always for lunch. Their lunch specials (prices, menue choices, portion sizes) are really superb. On our last couple of visits we've been disappointed in the food -- same items we'd previously ordered and found delicious. Maybe it was just bad luck.

All in all, I think Jalisco's track record entitles it to another chance.

Once in a while a pack of college kids will take over the joint and the resulting bedlam makes any attempt at conversation hopeless -- but most of our times there we haven't had that problem.

Hi Sue,

There's a great restaurant in downtown Harrisonburg called El Sol at 91
Elizabeth St. I'm not sure how conducive it would be for a group of 10 but I
bet you could push some tables together. It's my favorite Mexican place in
town and an office favorite. They're open Thursday-Monday.

i am a natural customer of the north river grill in the following sense. i so much like the idea of a sit-down restaurant without driving to harrisonburg that i have been a regular customer of every restaurant on that site. and will be in the future. but on to the list of what was good and bad. first of all what was good. *the atmosphere was great with the rustic theme and neighborhood feeling. *the food was good and there was always something on the menu that interested me. *the daily specials were very tasty and allowed for variety without the restaurant committing to offer that particular dish in the future. *the service was good most of the time though there were exceptions. and now what was bad. *freshness was sometimes a problem with some of the food. low turnover or something. *the place could still use some brightening through lighting and interior finishes. at times its just too dark. *it was not always easy to tell when the grill was open. the hours varied and the open sign stayed on all the time even when it was closed. ***** and now some free advice. concentrate more on making the food and service excellent than on trying to keep the prices down. especially at dinner when you can charge more than for lunch. ***** talk to the jmu small business development center 540-568-3227 about marketing and strategy. they can provide some helpful advice i am almost certain. ***** and a question since i am not sure. what is the current ownership and abc license status of the grill.

You need a web site. I have driven by there many times (on the way to Bobarea's) and have never stopped. I did look for a web site to see what you offered and couldn't find one. It doesn't have to be a fancy site, just something with your hours and menu. If I like what I see on the menu, then I will try it out.

I also read mousies input and she/he said that it was kind of dark. I don't care much for dark places (not to say I wont try it out). Dark places tend to make it feel dirty.

I may try it out this week instead of my favorite Bobarea. I would have tried you out before, though, if you had a website.

Do you own/work there? If so, I will introduce myself when I come in and give/leave you feedback after I have eaten.

roomtoroom ~ I do not work or run this place. A friend of mine is interested in a partnership and I have been in the restaurant business for 20 years now and, of course, would love the chance to update the place. I love the town and have eaten there about 3 years ago. The website is almost a must now. In my last restaurant, which we were forced to close due to an ignorant landlord, we had a great website for less than $30/month. Most business owners think that you have to pay much more than that but it is not the case. I have many ideas for NRG and my background is in basic All American food with great prices and fantastic servers. I am the cook of the family so quality and quantity are also very important.

As soon as things get rolling I wold love to tell the world, so please stay tuned here and I promise not to disappoint.

Thank you for your input and have a great Sunday.

from my understanding, the current partnership made a vital error of forgetting to re-new their license. hey did not get in trouble but it is a long process to re-instate. You must run ads in the paper along with the sign in the window.

With the current upswing in ALL aspects of food there is going to have to be a slight increase in prices but running daily specials is a great way to generate business.

Thank you for your input, it really does help, and I will keep everyone updated with info as it comes.

Well, from what I gathered today, Donnie has a couple looking to put some new life into the restaurant and hopefully I can become involved if they are looking for some quality cooking. If they do not work out or are not serious, then I believe myself and my partners have a chance of changing things for the better. Simple, quality food with reasonable prices and fast service lunch menu with a nicer sit down menu for dinner with happy pleasant servers. Also looking to separate the bar area to please the non-smoking customers.

Will post again in the near future with updates.

From: dinosaur --  Tue, March 04, 2008 9:55 am

This is in response to the request for comments. I've eaten at the NRG many times and found the number one problem to be inconsistent food quality. It ranged from excellent to poor. Friday nights were generally better but at times the quality would drop that night as well.
The reader who commented on the darkness of the place is in line with my thinking. Some windows in the south wall of the building would certainly brighten up the place.
Ripped vinyl seats didn't provide a good image, but I guess they were facing financial problems for a while and it is difficult to make repairs when you are trying to make ends meet.
I thought the new partner made a difference, but it was probably too late to turn things around.
Bridgewater does need a good "sit-down" restaurant. Hopefully, Don Muterspaugh will find the combination that works.

I caught the Friday night performance of the musical "South Pacific" at Turner Ashby, and it was great. The cast, crew and musicians all showed a lot of energy and talent. This is one of my favorite shows, and my favorite song ("There is Nothing Like a Dame") came off extremely well. My own kids are long gone from Turner Ashby and it's great to see the enthusiasm, dedication and musical ability of those coming through now. Congratulations all around! (Historical note, for those who may not know this: The actual sailors and nurses who served in World War II were actually about the age of high school students today -- not far off. From: Treeman-- Wed, February 20, 2008 1:14 pm

I've just read some serious allegations of waste and fraud on the part of our public officials and employees. I might be more inclined to take such comments more seriously if some specific instances and examples were supplied.

While I don't agree with all the programs our politicians are funding, most are good solid programs designed to meet the real needs of our citizenry. Nor do I see much in the way of waste or fraud on the part of state or local officials. Most state and local agencies operate on frugal budgets.

The costs of road production and maintenance have been rising consistently every year. It seems to me if we expect our economy to grow we need to accept the increasing costs of infrastructure to support it. It is my opinion that our state and local employees do a very good job with the resources as they are allocated.

I have no problem entrusting the proceeds of a gas tax increase to their able hands. I await the evidence of the malfeasance alluded to by others.

It is patently unfair to paint all government agencies with the charge of incompetent Maybe we should try to live without the services the government provides for a year. i am no fan of higher taxes. but the proposed one cent increase in the gasoline tax for each of the next five years looks sensible to me. the gas tax is fair as taxes go. if you drive more and use the roads more you pay more for upkeep. if drive less you dont. is the general assembly so anti tax that it cant even enact a small and sensible gas tax increase.

From: roomtoroom--WhomeverSun, February 17, 2008 7:00 pm

I disagree with this tax. Until we get some physical responsibility thru budgeting, checks and balances, some control over waste, and an assurance that this money will be used for roads instead of general wasting (I mean spending), then they are not entitled to taking any more money from us. Our state has become completely irresponsible with our money. Sure, we need our roads and bridges fixed. That is a fact. We already have tax money that was supposed to be used for the roads and is being spent elsewhere, lining the pockets of special interest and corruption.
I want our roads and bridges fixed as much as anyone but this tax will not fix roads anymore than the previous taxes we have already paid. When our local and state govts decide to spend responsibly, then I will be willing to support another tax.
Please, folks, quit listening to the foolishness the mainstream media feeds you. Their voices reek with bias reporting and special interest. The internet is full of information and just a little bit of looking and you can find out exactly where our money is going and why.
We all have to pay taxes and we all want the best for our communities. We all have to maintain budgets and spend within our means. Our local and state govts are not doing that. When they waste and overspend, they simply increase our taxes under the veil of deception. Its time to demand responsibility with our money.

roomtoroom wrote "When our local and state govts decide to spend responsibly, then I will be willing to support another tax." i agree with the basic idea. however. given the political environment i dont think we will ever have truly responsible spending. so do we freeze tax levels at what they are now forever since we will never reform the government. there will always be some waste and we understand thats part of doing things through government. but its so desirable to have law and order and roads etc that we put up with it. and i feel confident that an important percentage of new gas tax revenue would go toward roads. granted that waste fraud and abuse would eat up some of it. so i am for the modest proposed gas tax increase even knowing that it would not be spent with 100 percent efficiency.

From: re: roomtoroom-- Fri, February 22, 2008 2:24 pm

Mousie,
I understand your position and I do agree we need our roads maintained. We will get the gas tax and we will soon see where the money goes.
My point though, is to try and get people motivated to address the waste issue and spending responsibly. There is no excuse for the waste. A major issue in any private business is waste. Many companies budget a % decrease yearly in waste. Our state and local govts need to do the same thing. Controlling waste is a easy way to find additional money.
I travel extensively and I see state vehicles constantly. I know that the majority are out there doing exactly what we are paying them for. I have to wonder though when I get behind a state vehicle on Rt 6 (Nelson County) and follow them to Halifax. One person in the car and this is a good 2 hour drive. I can't imagine that someone closer to Halifax couldn't have been available instead of driving 2 hours one way. This is just one small example. The internet is full of examples of duplication, over spending, contract/bid issues, etc.
I am certainly not going to waste my time typing hundreds of examples of waste here. I think anyone who is remotely aware of state and local govts have seen examples of waste and if not, then I wouldnt be able to convince them anyway.
Again, my main issue is we need to push our elected (state and local) to look at waste and spending as hard as they look at tax increases. I hope to get others to also write letters and make calls to let our elected know we expect them to treat our money like it is theirs.

All I was saying is why bring Mr. Dillman down when it appears TV-3 made a sound decision in hiring him back. I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but it's obvious "the powers that be" at TV-3 didn't want Mr. Downs working there any more. The insider should just be glad we have someone in that anchor chair who knows the valley and our teams. I do find it hard to believe that a conspiracy to get rid of Mr. Downs and bring back Mr. Dillman could have taken place. This is TV-3 we're talking about, not some bigtime affiliate.

From: room-- Wed, February 06, 2008 11:32 pm

I have to decide whether to vote (primary) for Huckabee or Obama. I am waiting to see the dust settle a bit around Huckabee first. I have spent a lot of time on all of the candidates websites and Huckabee more closely represents me but he just hasn't had the media coverage needed. I do not want Hillary at all.
I hope it ends up with Obama as the Dem candidate. Hillary scares me to death with her flip flopping and honestly, we have had enough of the clinton/bush years.
I will most likely vote Rep in November simply because I am middle class and the Dems do nothing for the middle class - well maybe the lower middle class, but for most of us, nothing. Both groups love to pander to the poor and middle class, but if you look at their records their actions do not equal their words. I figure if Obama beats Hillary out, then at least if the Reps lose then Obama is a much better choice than Hillary.
It would be refreshing though to see someone like Huckabee, Obama, or even Romney in there over Clinton or McCain. We need new blood in our govt.
I hope everyone takes the time to look at the candidates web sites and studies each ones positions. Listening to the media or a blog for information will only leave you more uninformed. Each candidate has really good web sites with loads of information. Reading their sites will leave you with no question how they will govern. Please be informed voters for all our sakes.

Subject: The Bridgewater Bypass
From: Traveler--  Sat, February 02, 2008 7:33 am

I noticed that the latest town newsletter, the Current, has an article about the proposed bypass around Bridgewater. The article seemed to imply that getting roads approved is hard, and that the anti-road building forces have the natural advantage. As I look around our area, though, I see the opposite: seems to me the road builders and developers will get their way, possibly with a delay, but get their way all the same. Am I wrong about that?

Subject: Bridgewater By-pass
From: McGill--  Sun, Feb 03, 2008 7:01 pm

It does appear that developers have their way with roads, however they are footing the bill. A housing development has to meet standards which typically include streets, curbs, gutters and even sidewalks. When you own the land and are paying the bills, its much easier to build roads.
The problems begin when roads are proposed to benefit the greatest majority, like the by-pass. VDOT has to consider the opposition's opinions regardless how small and vocal the minority is because they will be using public funds as opposed to private money. It is safe to say, the Bridgewater Current is correct in their assessment. The NIMBY folks will create a delay and in doing so, cause the cost to increase.

When I opened up Buzz this morning I discovered it was gibberish again with the headings for your posts juxtaposition all over the place.  That has been occurring lately and I am at a loss to explain it.  Sometimes it takes an inordinate amount of time to upload a new message to the buzz.  But I check the final product against several types of internet browsers after uploading it and it always looks all right.  But later the gibberish shows up again when I go to the internet site to look at it.  Then, when I upload a fresh copy of Buzz to the Comcast website, it returns to looking as it is supposed to look.

Possibly it is related to current difficulties in uploading your posts to the Buzz site.  I don't know.  At any rate, please accept my apologies' for the sometimes horrible appearance of Buzz when you open it.  All I can say is try again later when this happens and it may look OK then (because I will have seen it in the mean time and "re-uploaded" it).

Well, I can hear our cat meowing to get out.  He still hasn't gotten the idea the deck is covered with ice and he will slide all over the place trying to get his footing.  At 17 years he definitely has a short memory.

like many of my neighbors i am a fan of the washington redskins. so i ask the question what is going on with trying to hire a new coach. coach williams seemed all ready to step in where coach gibbs had finally begun to get things going. and now theyre going to bring in a hotshot with all new assistant coaches or so it seems. i dont get it.

Mousie, I could possibly be one of your neighbors, so I need to take exception to you comment about being a Redskin fan. I personally am a Baltimore Colts fan. Don't laugh, someday the Colts will come back home. Long live Johnny Unitas!!!

Subject: A Snowy Surprise
From: bsniffles-- Fri, January 18, 2008 8:03 am

What a beautiful sight for sore eyes! Only regret is we didn't have this on Christmas day. I have a shih-tzu dog and when I let him out to potty (I shoveled a path for him) he ignored all my hard work and dove straight in...:))) guess children aren't the only ones who like the snow...it was so deep he had to "paw" his way back out!! Soo funny!
What about all you other "buzzers"? Any funny or interesting snow stories to entertain us all?

Yes, my funny sighting is seeing the folks in Richmond run to the stores to stock up on food when the weatherman calls for a "chance of flurries"! They want snow so badly that they go way overboard on the reactions. Then if we do actually get snow, they don't know how to drive in it and there are accidents everywhere. I long for a good old valley snow! (But not here in Richmond!!)

I certainly noticed it. I was out on Port Republic Road heading back toward 42 and Bridgewater when it cut loose. The snow started accumulating faster than they could salt the roads, and there was so much traffic exiting JMU that the salt trucks couldn't get through. I later heard that Harrisonburg declared a snow emergency. Bridgewater was clear and clean.

Subject: Bridgewater Bypass
From: nannyjay-- Tue, January 15, 2008 10:32 pm

There will be an open forum regarding the proposed Bridgewater Bypass solutions on Wednesday, January 16 at Turner Ashby High School from 4-7 p.m. The following website gives a wealth of information about both projects, including a No Build option, in addition to the proposed A and B options. It's 26 pages in all, but worth glancing at - VDOT has done their research well.

virginiadot.org/VDOT/Projects/....

If the above link doesn't open, type the following into your browser minus the quotes: "http://www.virginiadot.org/VDOT/Projects/Staunton/Staunton/asset_upload_file534_18331.pdf"

You can also see exactly where the two bypasses will run by checking out the website below - it takes a while for it to download, but gives an excellent aerial view of just what VDOT has in mind.

thanks for posting those links. those are impressive maps. wow you can see a lot. even the airplanes at bridgewater air park. as i look at the alternatives i like the southern one better because it gives another quick exit path from turner ashby high school after an event is over. like a football game. it also seems to spare more farmland in that im thinking everything between the bypass and bridgewater will fill in with development. maybe a zoning expert could say more about that.

From: New Kid--  Mon, January 28, 2008 11:00 pm

The comments above, listentobwater, didn't seem directed at whether or not the proposed bypass would solve the traffic or truck problems in Bridgewater so much as the disruption such a bypass would cause to Bridgewater's adjacent farm lands.  Depending on which alternative is chosen, Bridgewater's nearby neighborhoods and ecosystem would also be affected.

In terms of traffic, certainly a lot of traffic pressure would be taken off the West end of Bridgewater at the intersection of Dinkel and route 42.  I was at the meeting mentioned above at TAHS and it seems that where Rt. 42 enters Bridgewater from the East could not be broadened to 4 lanes at the intersection with Oakwood Drive.  Therefore, the traffic (especially trucks) would bottleneck there and make traffic at that end of town more congested.  But it would keep more truck traffic off the main drag and away from the college, which has been a major concern of citizens at that end of town.  By contrast, the people at the East end of town would be subject to the traffic noises from the bypass passing close to their neighborhoods, not to mention the sight of the bypass destroying their bucolic view of the farms and rolling hills in that area.

Subject: Analog TV Converter Box
From: Old Timer--  Thu, January 10, 2008 12:24 pm

In 404 days as of today, TV stations are scheduled to only broadcast in digital TV.  That means any non-digital TV will not be able to receive programs in digital TV.  Possibly cable companies will have built in converters  built into their box tops (Tivo or DVRs, for example) that would allow you to continue to receive on an analog set.  However, if you want to receive digital on your analog set using an outside antenna (or possibly even with a cable set up) you will need a converter box.  You can obtain up to two coupons from the government in the amount of $40 each towards the cost of a converter box.  Simply go to https://www.mydtv2009.gov/Default.aspx There you can fill out a form that allows the coupon(s) to be sent through the mail or it gives a phone number for you to call.  But as I understand it, this is a one-time deal and when the government runs out of their limited supply of coupons, the deal closes.

Subject: Analog/Digital Tv
From: roomtoroom-- Thu, January 10, 2008 9:49 pm

Here is a FCC link for a little better understanding of the new Digital signal issue:
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/digitaltv.html

The only people who should be affected are those who use an antenna to receive their TV reception. If you use cable or satellite then you should have no problems. If you are unsure, then simply call the cable company that you use and they can certainly tell you. Unfortunately, I have been hearing more and more about this issue and have even heard that some people are running out and buying new TVs and not even knowing if they bought a digital TV. Everything that says digital doesn't mean that the tuner is digital and that's what type of TV you would need if buying a new one.
So, getting the converter is fine if you want one, but if you are planning on keeping cable or satellite then don't waste your money on a converter. You wont need it.

From: New Kid-- Fri, January 11, 2008 5:36 am

All good advice.  Another frustrating element facing people shopping for a new TV is the difference between a regular digital TV (DTV) that has the standard TV 4:3 screen ratio and the 16:9 screen ratio of the HDTV, the latter of which lends itself to all the new wide screen programs on TV.  A very detailed explanation of the differences between analog TV,  DTV, and HDTV can be found at: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/hdtv.htm

From: sissy sue-- Fri, January 11, 2008 9:09 am

The converter box won't "do it all" for some of us. IF YOU CANNOT GET THE UHF SIGNALS OFF THE PRESENT TOWERS YOU CANNOT GET THE DIGITAL SIGNAL. That's right, if you are using an antenna to get free TV and you cannot presently get any channels above 13 - you are out of luck. I know. Someone knowledgeable about this event let me borrow a converter box and try it with my present (new in 2005) antenna and digital capable TV. Since I'm unable to catch the UHF signals from the present tower on Massanutten, I can't receive the digital signal. So, what do I do if I don't want to start paying for satelite? My options are: 1) raise my antenna. I'll have to pay a pro to come out and test to see how high I have to go - 10, 20, 30 feet? Neighbors will love that. 2) Stop watching TV altogether.
I cannot get cable where I am. They won't come. And I've heard ya'll gripe about enough I don't want it. And no, Verizon won't run the necessary lines for DSL internet either.
Oh, and if anyone suggests I can get all my entertainment/news/sports from radio; after dark, when they cut their power, I can't get any of the local stations.

What was the reason for forcing this digital switch anyway? Was it for the consumer? If so, THANKS CONGRESS!!! I really appreciate it!

SissySue,
Sounds like you have no choice but satellite. I am in a similar area (no dsl, cable, etc). I use Direct TV as my tv and for a time used Wildblue for the internet. Recently, EVDO has been offered in my area and I switched from Wildblue to Alltel for my internet access. You might want to check with Alltel or Verizon to see if they offer EVDO in your area. As not, then Wildblue or Hughes Net may be your only choice. I had some problems with wildblue (they oversold the bandwidth in my area) but I don't know a thing about Hughes Net so you might want to research both.
Good luck.

Isn't it all a pain in the tush! We should all go on a cable strike like the writers in Hollywood. Then maybe the cable companies will stop jerking us all around! They want us to go out and buy new TVs so they can charge us more $ for high def. cable. Now they have everyone so confused that no one knows if their TV will work after the "big switch" or not.

It sorta reminds me of the food hoarding of 2000 when everyone was afraid that the computers wouldn't work when the clocks changed from 1999. Personally I would love it if my TV didn't work, my family watchs too much! And I am sure there would be a big TV shortage about that time. China will probable refuse to export electronics to us after the toy scares of this winter.??? Who knows what will happen........... <;)

From: nocable--  Tue, February 12 5:47 pam

The DTV conversion applies ONLY to Full Power TV which in our area means Channels 3, 51, (& 29 if you get it on channel 29). If you get TV on channels other than 5, 9, 18, 29, you're probably receiving LPTV, low power TV which has NOT been mandated to convert to Digital. So, if you are buyng a set-top box to get Digital, and want to continue getting those channels be sure your converter box has analog pass-through capability. reference <http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/DTVandLPTV.html>.

It's hearsay but here's what I heard: One of the co-owners--the youngster--neglected to obtain a "license to sell alcohol" permit. So, until that license is obtained, they can't sell the stuff. Can only sell food. If anyone knows more, I'd be interested to know as well.

usually when there's a notice from the abc guys and they're not selling alcohol it means they sold to a minor; for a first time offense they usually make you temporarily stop selling alcohol. but i don't know if this is the case with them. however, i can't think of any other reason why a business would stop selling alcohol, especially a business like this, as alcohol sales are very popular and bring in the dough. let's just hope my instincts are wrong.

The person responsible for maintaining the license did not re-new in time so the process HAS to start over. It is a 3-8 week time table depending on the backlog of work for the ABC Staunton branch. 2 ads in the paper plus a 30 day sign in the window and the interview process. Thankfully there were NO violations pertaining to underage or after hours or anything else.

Subject: Delegate Lohr's agri-tourism initiative
From: Libertarian--  Fri, January 04, 2008 3:13 pm

I see in the news that Delegate Lohr would like for the state to hire an agri-tourism director to promote things such as his (!) pumpkin patch. Does Delegate Lohr truly believe in the "limited government" principles that he claims at election time? A limited government doesn't going around using tax money to favor one sector or another. Instead it limits its activities to those necessary to maintaining order and justice. We can have plenty of order and justice if the agri-tourism supporters fund their own promotion.

I agree wholeheartedly. As a conservative Republican, I am very much in favor of limited government. This is just another example of unnecessary government activities. There are a certain few things that the government should be doing (post office, providing for the common defense, roads, etc.). However, we have no one to blame but ourselves, the general public's response to any unpleasantness, generally is "the government should do something about that". We have come to expect the government to be all things to all people, cradle to grave. We did it to ourselves.

Here, here, Let delegate Lohr pay for his own advertising. Come on delegate, stand up and be a real republican.... not a dupe of the monied interests in the state.

If the republicans want to take back the statehouse and the assembly, they are going to have to get back to the basics of republicanism. I haven't voted for a republican for the last two elections now.... that after giving them a lifetime of support.... apparently I'm not alone. They have become arrogant at all levels and lost the guiding principle of true conservatism.

Subject: dismissal in clerks office
From: mousie--  Wed, January 02, 2008 am

i was sorry to see that there had been an apparently political dismissal of an employee of the circuit court clerks office. its a shame that it happened. and yet. given that the dismissed employee had been running a hard campaign against the new boss. and that some of her fellow employees had worked against her election. it seems that it might have been best for her to look for a new job somewhere else even if she hadnt been dismissed. and i would also add that i am an outsider and i dont know what goes on in that office and i am sure i dont know half of the real story. and finally. i have heard that the individual involved is a talented and hard working person and i hope she will get a good job somewhere else.
