We
used video from our space-themed Odyssey! concerts in June, 2001 to audition for a
Headline concert at Pinnacle 2002.
Pinnacle is a national conference for community and professional
handbell groups sponsored by AGEHR. We were delighted to be selected as
the Saturday night Headline concert!
This year the conference was held in Orlando, Florida.
"Warm weather, sunscreen, Disney World, Universal Studios, and
Pinnacle, here we come!"
The
logistics of moving equipment from Seattle to Orlando was daunting and
required much advance work. Just
prior to traveling, we used garbage bags, a handheld sealer, and a shop
vac to suck the air out of all of the foam for more compact shipping.
After using bodies for squishing the air out of the bags, we tried using
long, heavy bell cases, not pictured. The garbage bags, once
compacted were stuffed into base bell cases. We exchanged technique
stories with Glenn Hascall while in Florida! HE had a higher
power shop vac than we did!

with the addition of, hmm, well, Loren! |
Ringers
arrived in Orlando from Monday through Thursday. Patrice,
Brenna and Jennifer adorned their room with leftover Christmas
decorations that Brenna later used on her Klingon Warrior costume and
with 7 cases of bells.
Jennifer is shown discussing (cell phone home to her Mom) Brett
Boone's three year, multimillion dollar contract with the Mariners.

Our
rehearsal space (also kitchen, laundry room, party room, movie theatre,
and sleeping quarters) was cozy.
In order to get to bells, some of us had to crawl under the
tables.
Some changes of positions during rehearsal of pieces required
running out into the hall, through the other door and then crawling
under the tables!
Darn, no pictures of that!
The therapeutic ironing board and iron are shown where they were
used most, the director spot.
It took three irons to satisfy Jonathan!

Meighan
Pritchard and Brenna Lehman were selected in an All-Star choir with
director Hart Morris.
We enjoyed the classes and variety of concerts on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday.
Saturday afternoon we began to setup for our Saturday evening
concert.

We
used a shell to improve the acoustics which is what you see just behind
us.
It seemed to add a space ship effect, appropriate for our
Odyssey! concert.
We're watching!

To
enhance the space-theme of our Odyssey! concert, during
the second half, we all wore costumes
depicting some sort of alien, astronaut, or well known science
fiction character. Matt Winningham came zooming out as
young Anakin Skywalker pretending to be pod racing.
Ben Wearn ran wildly about, impersonating Robin Williams
as Mork. Judy
Jetson was the most difficult to guess, aka, Jennifer Vangolen. See
all the costumes in the section just below.
On the right, Ben Wearn, Nan Beth Walton,
Scott Barker and Brenna Lehamn, still off-stage, rang the Theme
from the X-Files. On
Sunday we returned borrowed equipment and transferred equipment
out of the hotel. We
returned to cold, wet, snowy Seattle and our own warm beds! |
