Custom Shades and Blinds| Are conservatories HOT? Yes, they can be. Given the nature of the structure, it would be difficult for it not to retain the heat caused by the relection of the sun on the glass surfaces, but it doesn't need to be uncomfortable or stifling. Using common sense practices of opening your sashes and roof ventilators during the cool of the morning, will allow the heat to escape naturally. In extreme summer weather, exterior shades or interior blinds are helpful in keeping the glare from interfering with the enjoyment of your conservatory. |

There are two ways to
approach the problem of shading a conservatory :
External shading is installed at the beginning of the summer season and removed in the fall. Internal shading is hard installed within the conservatory and is manually engaged as needed. These photos (at left and above) are an example of internal shading. It is not always necessary to place a shade at every roof panel. |

| Internal blinds are custom measured and fabricated for your conservatory roof configuration. Each glass panel can be shaded by an individual blind, manually operated, much like traditional window shades. Retracting rollers allow for incremental positioning of the shade across the glass panel area. An assortment of fabrics and shading quotients are available for a totally custom installation. | ||
| External shading can be accomplished in a very easy and economical way, by using light-weight greenhouse cloth. This is available at most gardening centers and can be draped over hip roof, gable roof or shed roof conservatories and easily anchored to the roof glass overlay with plastic (not wood) pinch-type clothespins. Blustery winds may loosen the cloth, but re-anchoring is a simple process (if you can find the clothespins!). | ![]() |

Adapting this shading technique to octagon roof conservatories, conservatory roofs with lanterns, or other unique configurations, requires the fabrication of a custom shade which will fit the contours of the roof system. These shades are manufactured with a grommet and toggle system which holds the shade in place during windy weather. The shade material is a UV stabilized vinyl mesh used in many outdoor applications. It is available in a wide range of colors and mesh densities. Custom shades are available for any roof style. | |
