Lantern Roofs and Skylights![]() |
Rooftop skylights or lanterns are a rarely seen amenity of many metropolitan high-rise buildings. Some are in varying stages of disrepair, some have been forgotten - hidden by drop-ceiling installations. Sadly, many have been removed and sent to the city dump. However, a renewed interest in these architectural gems has lead to preservation and replication attempts. Many times, boarded up ceiling shafts are discovered during the renovation process and the ability to open the upper floor area to natural light becomes a unique decorating idea and an attractive solution for introducing light into a dark room or windowless office environment. |
| A new twist on an old favorite is the use of skylights on a traditional covered porch area. Even on a sunny day, these areas are usually in need of some additional lighting. With a little thought and planning, these special additions can become an impressive architectural focal point. | ![]() |

If you
are starting from scratch with an open patio area, why
not have the best of both worlds. A glass roof will
protect the area and the furnishings from the rain, but
allow a view of the glorious sky on beautiful sunny days.
It will also become a dramatic spot for entertaining
under the stars.
