This chapter gives specifications and longevity tables for each of the various "groups" of locomotives identified in the previous section. Each group includes locomotives of identical classes, builders, and (generally) common specifications. Group numbers begin with a "C" for "consolidation", followed by the nominal tractive effort of the class (in hundreds of pounds), with slight adjustments to avoid duplication.
The first table below broadly describes the groups listed. Following that, each group's specifications and renumberings are defined. The tables display the evolution of the various individual locos within the group in a way that permits comparison and contrast of their varying lives. The tables show at a glance the various numbers held by particular units over time, and summarizes the data in tabular form.
The column in Table 8-1 labeled "unit-years" indicates the sum of the number of years of service provided by the locomotives of each class to the Rio Grande core group, and is meant to indicate the relative significance of each class to the total history of the Rio Grande core group.
After the first table, Figure 8-1 is a longevity chart that shows the number of units in service on the Rio Grande core group each year for narrow gauge units, standard gauge units, and total locomotives in service on the Rio Grande core group. Similarly, all multi-locomotive groups also have figures showing the number of units in service on the Rio Grande core group each year. These charts may serve to graphically illustrate the rates of acquisition and disposition of the various classes of equipment. Groups with members rebuilt to another gauge will have two such charts, one for each gauge. Service on predecessor and successor roads, and off-line lease service are not shown in these charts, nor is service under a different wheel arrangement.
