Description of
Ipswich, from http://www.rootsweb.com/~macipswi/index.html
Ipswich, first
called Agawam as it began as a native Indian tribal village, was settled by
colonists in 1633, incorporated in 1634.
"1633, March.
John Winthrop, Jr. and twelve others commence a settlement here. 17April 1st.
The Court of Assistants forbid any to reside in this place, without their
leave, except those already come. Then follows a list of them; viz. — Mr. John
Winthrop, Jr., Mr. William Clerk, Robert Coles, Thomas Howlet, John Biggs, John
Gage, Thomas Hardy, William Perkins, Mr. John Thorndike, and William Serjeant.
Three are wanting to make up the first number. June 11th. Thomas Sellan has
permission to become an inhabitant."
The History of Ipswich, Essex and Hamilton,
by Joseph B. Felt, 1834.
On August 4, 1634
the village was incorporated and renamed Ipswich for the town in Suffolk
County, East Anglia, the locale where most of its first settlers originated.
The present town
composes thirty-three square miles encompassing seven hills supported by a
topographical landscape of marshes, dunes, beaches, uplands, forests, fields
and farmland. The fresh water Ipswich River originates forty-five miles to the
west and runs through the town’s heart where it becomes tidal and salt on it’s
way to the Atlantic Ocean. Its Crane Beach is reputed to be one of the
most beautifully scenic beaches in all New England.
Description of
cemetery:
This cemetery is medium-sized for a country ground, about 1000 internments. It measures at least 200’ wide and wider in some points, and extends 400’ to 500’ from the far edge of the old Ipswich “green” (where commoners who abutted the “green” were allowed to let their livestock graze) to the bank overlooking the Ipswich River. Of all the cemeteries in Ipswich, this is the one in most disrepair, and also the one with the most potential to be a beautiful and restful spot, because it overlooks an idyllic bend in the River, and has trees and bushes of every variety. The stones are quite old and beautiful, but many have been severely eroded, and there are also many tombs along one of the main avenues and many family plots. The front of the ground is bordered by an old iron fence.
The cemetery was first used in 1756; see Steph Kinsman’s record. Regular burials here started about 1784. It was used until about 1939, with only two burials after that; see Henry Brown’s record. All told, there are about 900 records.
Location of
cemetery:
The grounds are on County Street aka Route 1A and also Route 133, as they follow the same path through Ipswich.
From the main intersection in the village of Ipswich, sometimes referred to as “Five Corners” (the intersection of Market Street and Central Street and South Street converge here), proceed east on Route 1A for ¼ mile, and you are there. The ground is located on the western edge of the village green on Route 1A, an easy walk from downtown, past some beautiful antique homes and buildings. This cemetery is also a stone’s throw from the Whipple House, an extraordinary example of early architecture, and the Hurd House which is the home of the Ipswich Historical Society.
Explanation of
terms in burial records, below:
Entries are alphabetical. NEE refers to maiden names. The VETERAN entry is not yet working properly. (If I had evidence that the person was a veteran, you should see a check mark next to the word “VETERAN”.) GRID refers to the conventional grid system that was used by many, including the WPA, to map the cemeteries. The lowest letters are usually to the left (south) as you face the cemetery from the street. The lowest numbers are usually closest to the street. Unfortunately, many of the old stones have been pushed, moved, or fallen on their own, over the years, so the grid is no longer as useful as it might once have been. So if you go to locate a particular stone, be prepared for a careful and possibly lengthy visit! “Inscription 2003 field observations” were not made yet, for this cemetery. “WPA records from 1930” were taken from Works Progress Administration (WPA) typed 3x5 index cards, originally prepared in 1935. (In some cases these WPA entries have dropped a word or two, due to software errors.)
Sources and
limitations of data:
As noted, field observations of the stones have not yet been completed for this ground. The WPA records from 1935 were the source of this data, and have been shown to be both accurate and comprehensive in previous cases. These records include all the WPA records from 1935.
(In some cases, a few words of the WPA inscriptions were dropped from these records when I translated the data from Microsoft Access into Microsoft RTF files in order to upload to the web.)
Other errors, inaccuracies, and omissions may exist. These records have not been checked against the Vital Records kept by the town, which are not sorted by cemetery in any event, but are another good source of data, along with other archives of family genealogies you can investigate by contacting people at these other links.
