Ipswich, first
called Agawam as it began as a native Indian tribal village, was settled by
colonists in 1633, incorporated in 1634.
"1633, March.
John Winthrop, Jr. and twelve others commence a settlement here. 17April 1st.
The Court of Assistants forbid any to reside in this place, without their
leave, except those already come. Then follows a list of them; viz. — Mr. John
Winthrop, Jr., Mr. William Clerk, Robert Coles, Thomas Howlet, John Biggs, John
Gage, Thomas Hardy, William Perkins, Mr. John Thorndike, and William Serjeant.
Three are wanting to make up the first number. June 11th. Thomas Sellan has
permission to become an inhabitant."

On August 4, 1634
the village was incorporated and renamed Ipswich for the town in Suffolk
County, East Anglia, the locale where most of its first settlers originated.
The present town
composes thirty-three square miles encompassing seven hills supported by a
topographical landscape of marshes, dunes, beaches, uplands, forests, fields
and farmland. The fresh water Ipswich River originates forty-five miles to the
west and runs through the town’s heart where it becomes tidal and salt on it’s
way to the Atlantic Ocean. Its Crane Beach is reputed to be one of the
most beautifully scenic beaches in all New England.
Description of
cemetery:
This cemetery was used for the burial of immigrants to the town, from about 1913 until about 1939, based on recorded burials. For that reason it is of particular interest to this town which was of course built by immigrants and has always benefited so much from the various immigrants who have chosen to settle here and add to the town’s character and well-being. The cemetery grounds are about 100’ wide by 275’ deep, very similar in size to the New Linebrook Cemetery in the Linebrook Parish of the town. There is a house near the entrance to the grounds, and the other sides are surrounded by woods. There are several paths into the woods, one which goes up hill and leads to the main Highland Cemetery. Just the other side of that cemetery, the hill descends into the ancient Old North Burying Ground. There is a short path through the grounds, which is fairly level, but the ground is bumpy in spots that might be a bit of a challenge to walk on, for less fit visitors. There is an animal pound nearby, and you can occasionally hear one or another of the residents calling out.
Location of
cemetery:
Ipswich is accessed by either Routes 133 and Route 1A. This cemetery is located 1 mile north of downtown Ipswich. Take Town Farm Road to the right. As you bear right onto Town Farm Road you will pass the Locust Grove Cemetery on your immediate left. Continue a ¼ mile and take a right on Fowler’s Lane. The road pretty much ends at the cemetery, where it turns to dirt. There is space for a few cars to park, and there is no traffic here.

terms in burial records, below:
Entries are alphabetical. NEE refers to maiden names. The VETERAN entry is not yet working properly. (If I had evidence that the person was a veteran, you should see a check mark next to the word “VETERAN”.) The notation of MAP refers to coordinates on a hand-drawn map that I made of the location of the stones within the cemetery; it is a small cemetery but it is not easy to find the stones even with the map, since many of the stones are in Greek, Polish, or French. GRID refers to the conventional grid system that was used by many, including the WPA, to map the cemeteries. The lowest letters are to the left (south) as you face the cemetery from the street. The lowest numbers are closest to the street. “Inscription 2003 field observations” were detailed by reading and recording each stones as best we could, and “WPA records from 1930” were taken from Works Progress Administration (WPA) typed 3x5 index cards, originally prepared in 1935. Thee was very little information on the cards for this cemetery. (For those Ipswich cemetery lists where these WPA records are included, in some cases these entries have dropped a word or two, due to software errors.)
Sources and
limitations of data:
Again, we had a real time of it, trying to decipher some of these stones, and the translation issues were daunting. Our team included Polish and Greek speakers, but the old carvings were still hard to get, at times. Field observations were completed in 2005. These records include all readable stones from 2005 and all the WPA records from 1935. Occasionally stones are found and last names are unknown, in which case the other information on the stone is not included in this listing.
(As noted above, in some cases, a few words of the WPA inscriptions were dropped from these records when I translated the data from Microsoft Access into Microsoft RTF files in order to upload to the web.)
Other errors, inaccuracies, and omissions may exist. These records have not been checked against the Vital Records kept by the town, which are not sorted by cemetery in any event, but are another good source of data, along with other archives of family genealogies you can investigate by contacting people at these other links.
