Homelands

There are two geographical regions that are important to our genealogy. The first is the McGill homeland in Scotland. The second is the valley in Canada where Archibald and Marion settled. There is a separate page for each region.

As far back as we can trace our ancestry, the McGills lived primarily in an area of Scotland called Largieside. Largieside is an area on the northwest side of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyllshire, Scotland. The MacDonalds of Largie owned most of the land there, hence the name.
When Archibald and Marion immigrated to Canada, they settled in Ormstown. Ormstown is in the Chateauguay Valley of Quebec, Canada, which is just across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal. Ormstown itself is even further south, and is almost to New York state.
The Diaspora. Archibald was the only family member to die in Ormstown. Over the century and a half since then, the family has flowed west and south.
