Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park, December 4, 1999

On Dec. 4th, the Venture crew hiked at Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. We invited non-Venture Scouts to join us and had two accept the offer. Again, we were blessed with beautiful and unusually warm weather. The bad side of that is that MANY other people also took advantage of the weather to take in the very popular Old Rag hike that day. We took frequent rests on the steep switchbacks that are prevalent for the first 2 miles. The rock climbing and scrambling for the last mile to the summit, though, made up for the hard work early on. Everyone had a great time on the hike that totalled 8.8 miles. Attendees included: Adam S., Chris C., Chris L., Jeffrey C., Ryan C., David K., Matt W., Mr. Schwartz, Mr. Wood, Mr. Cheok, Mr. Clark, Mr. Zaritsky, and Mrs. Krieger.

Maryland Appalachian Trail, November 6 & 7, 1999

On Nov. 6 & 7, the Venture crew hiked the Appalachian Trail in Maryland from the Interstate 70 crossing to the Pennsylvania state line. The hike covered 17.5 miles. Three Scouts (Adam S., Danny D., and Chris C.) and two adult leaders (Mr. Schwartz and Mr Davis) attended. The weather was outstanding! On Friday, we lunched at Annapolis Rock and watched the many climbers there. Friday night was spent at Hemlock Hill Shelter, which we finally found after realizing that the trail had been rerouted and no longer went by the shelter! Saturday's hike was long and challenging, especially the last 2.5 miles as we descended from High Rock into Pen Mar on a steep and very rocky trail. We made it back to the parking lot with just few minutes of daylight to spare.
