The Diet

The National Diet (Parliament) is the highest and most important governing body in Japan. It enacts the country's laws, it decides the national budget, it approves the conclusion of treaties, it designates the Prime Minister and initiates amendments to the constitution.

Completed in 1936, it took 17 years to build the entire structure, which comprises two Houses: The House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, two governing bodies with independent functions.
