Bullying
School Violence Awareness Week (October 15-19, 2007)
Activity adapted from Bullying Webquest http://www.edina.k12.mn.us/concord/classrooms/5th/mccarthy/webquest/intro.htm

It is a sad time at your school.
Bullying has become a problem and is starting to affect everyone in school.

Some students bully others with their words and actions.
Naturally, some students are the victims of the bullies.
The remaining students witness the bullying, and feel helpless to do anything about it.

Nobody feels safe, and no one seems to be able to enjoy school anymore.
Finally, you decide, it's time take matters into your own hands and do something about it.

Step 1:
  • You are going to work in groups of 3.
  • Select your role in the group. You’ll be approaching your research from the point of view of that role. Choose from one of the three roles in the table below.
  • As a group you will be exploring all perspectives of a bullying situation.

Billy Bully and Becky Bully

Billy and Becky are typical bullies. They make other kids feel bad in all sorts of different ways. Their favorite targets are Vince and Vanessa. Sometimes they do it on purpose, and other times they don't even realize they are being bullies. Thankfully, they have realized that they have bullied other kids, and are now looking to change their ways.

Bully Activity Questions

Vince Victim and Vanessa Victim

Vince and Vanessa are unhappy. They want to enjoy school, but are having a hard time doing so. Billy and Becky are making them feel uncomfortable, threatened, and left out. Things have finally gone too far, so Vince and Vanessa are taking action. They have had enough of being bullied and are looking for ways to prevent it.

Victim Activity Questions

Wally Witness and Whitney Witness

Wally and Whitney see what happens to Vince and Vanessa every day. They know that the things Billy and Becky are doing are wrong. They'd like to help Vince and Vanessa, but are unsure what to do. They're also worried that getting involved will lead Becky and Billy to start bullying them. Finally, after being unsure for so long, Wally and Whitney have become determined to help their friends.

Witness Activity Questions

Step 2: Collecting specific information
Once you select your role, search for answers to questions that relate to your role at:

Stop Bullying Now!

  • If you have to wait for your partners to complete their questions,  you may explore some of the Webisodes listed below.
(Please Note:  Webisode links below are only available at school.  However, you can visit Stop Bullying Now! from home and view these Webisodes.)
  • After viewing a Webisode, see if you can answer the questions correctly that go along with each video.

Step 3: Collecting general information
  • Meet with the other members of the group.
  • Share what you have each learned about bullies, victims, and the people who witness bullying.
  • Now you should all be able to answer the general questions about bullying on the back of you activity sheet.
By the time you finish this project, you should have a much better idea of what bullying is all about. Maybe you have bullied someone without realizing it. Perhaps you've learned some ways that you can stand up to bullies, or you've found out how you can help your friends stand up to them.

Even if you feel there is very little bullying at your school, any one of these things could help lead to a happier and safer environment for everyone there. You have the knowledge, now it's time to apply that knowledge and help make your school and community a better place.
