About Uechi-Ryu Karate Do
"Uechi-ryu Karate Do" literarily means "Uechi style empty hand way."
Uechi-ryu is a traditional Chinese/Okinawan weaponless defensive system. It is
named for Sensei Kanbun Uechi (1877-1948). Kanbun first studied karate in Fuzhou
City Fujian Province, China at the Kojo Dojo near a boarding house named the
Ryukyukan. He later left that place and went to the Fuzhou central Buddhist
Temple where he met Zhou Zhihe (1874-1926) who was supposedly the 36th
generation head of the temple. Here it is said that Kanbun studied under Li
Zhaobei and Ke Xidi, and was proficient in a variety of chu'an-fa (Chinese
Boxing) including Duck, OX, Dog, Monkey, Tiger and Singing Crane boxing. Uechi
Kanbun received hi teaching license in Pangainuun (meaning
"half-hard, soft") chu'an-fa in 1904 at the age of 27. He opened his
first school in Nansoue, about 250 miles Northwest of Fuzhou where he taught for
3 years. In 1910 he eventually left China and returned to Okinawa. His first
dojo in Okinawa was in Wakayama city Wakayama prefecture and was know as
Pangainuun Ryu. After Kanbun's death, Sensei Uechi's students renamed the system in his honor.
Uechi-ryu is characterized by a compact, upright stance, circular hard and soft
(evasive) blocks, open hand, one knuckle techniques, elbow strikes, and fast and
low close-range
kicks.
Uechi-ryu was brought to the United States from Okinawa in 1958 by Sensei George
Mattson. Sensei Mattson, President of the International Uechi-ryu Karate
Federation (IUKF) is currently the highest-ranking American in Uechi-ryu
karate.
Today, Uechi-ryu is taught in WMCA's, Gyms, Churches, and Private Facilities around the world. The growth of Uechi-ryu
is testament to its simplicity and effectiveness as a martial art.
