"Ignorance is not a firm basis for democracy."

   - Thomas Jefferson

Colin Powell

Though he has been coached well, Powell is not a convincing liar as we all learned from his 2/5/03 presentation at the United Nations where he tried to justify an invasion of Iraq. Not only were his "facts" specious, Powell obviously knew that he had nothing of value to say. Never was it more plain than after Powell's UN talk that the United States has thrown away the sympathy of the world engendered by the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.

Even Newsweek magazine agrees the UN talk was all part of a big lie. In its March 3, 2003 issue, in the Periscope section, the magazine wrote that the Bush Administration had deliberately suppressed data that cleared Iraq of any charges of possessing weapons of mass destruction. The source Newsweek cited was the late Lt. Gen. Hussein Kamal, former minister of Iraq's military industry and the man formally in charge of its chemical/nuclear/biological programs. Kamal defected to the US and it was information provided by him that Powell and others have cited as proving that Iraq has WMD.

According to John Barry, from Newsweek, the Administration removed a central portion of Kamel's testimony wherein Kamel states that Iraq had, "destroyed all its chemical and biological weapons stocks and the missiles to deliver them." He further states that Iraq, having destroyed its WMD still retained the ability to make more, though they chose not to do so.

Here is yet another case where Bush picks and chooses what to present in his drive to justify invading Iraq.
