Mile Marker:
Date Added: Fri Feb 5 17:42:35 CST 1999
Speed Measuring Technology Used: radar
Average Ticket Cost: $166 52/25
Group Running Trap: Local PD
Type of car used: marked
Used: weekly
Scanner Frequency:
Latitude: 41.2083
Longitude: -73.524

Additional Info: The marked Local PD usually sits inside a driveway (I don't know how thats legal!) late at night (10:30 pm-1 am), any part of the week or weekend. The road starts at Nolan field, and turns to the right, and once you're around the peak of the turn, he can probably can pick you up. Unluckily, that night, my detector wasn't on (because I've never seen him there before), and he snagged me. My detector has picked him up lately though, but be wary. He'll also make it seem like he's not going after you, but will start up a while after you go by, pick you up once you're on Olsen Drive, or over the bridge. Plus, he'll take a long time to write up the ticket. Still not sure how he can sit in the driveway though...we'll see how it works out in court.

The patrol car is not visible, since it is in a turnout after the corner. He also hides at the entry to the campground ahead. Evenings, they often hand out at the intersection in Pleasant Valley and watch for complete stops at the stop sign.

Speed Measuring Technology Used: radar
Average Ticket Cost: unknown
Group Running Trap: Highway Patrol
Type of car used: marked
Used: weekly
Scanner Frequency:
Latitude: 41.6
Longitude: -73.2

Additional Info: Be careful coming North on Rt. 61 from the center of Bethlem towards Morris. This is a frequent place for speed traps almost weekly for the troopers. They like to sit at the Bethlehem Fairgrounds entrances. Coming north on Rt. 61 there is a long uphill before you come to a quick turn to your left and the fairgrounds are ahead of you on the right. For unsuspecting drivers during the day or night they clock you as soon as you come around the corner. They like to get you coming North or South because in both directions you crest a hill before you get to them. It is also a good place to get pulled over at night for seatbelts and emissions stickers, and then they snag you with the D.W.I. testing (and we all know what happens next). The troopers around the area are usually young so be smart don't wise off or give them lip because they are right out of the academy and won't hesitate to bring you in!

The speed limit drops as low as 25 along these routes. Chester operates two marked cars (late model, white fords) and there is often a State Trooper (with or without lights on top of his ford) in the area. The effort is quite significant given that this town only has 3,000 people. Also, be careful since much of the road is straight or has broad, easy curves yet the speed limit is only 40 on these stretches.

He will pull you over for ANYTHING over the speedlimit (see also 5mph). He usually aims the gun out the window while he is perpendicular to the road - aims toward WEST-BOUND traffic. Also look for mass scale traps on ST. JAMES ave which is quite near College Deli. 2 Cars sit on either sides of the road, one with radar and the other to flag people down. They pulled me over for *8* MPH over!

Additional Info: Riversville Road / Sherwood Avenue: As you head south down Riversville Road toward the Byram area the police have found a very good location to pick off a back-road warrior. About 10 feet after you go under the Merritt Parkway (Rt. 15) overpass you will occasionally find a Smokey down a little dirt road, twenty feet back in the woods, with a bird's eye angle on the road. I know he's there and still come close to getting nabbed every time I go through this area (which is often as it is my way to and from work).

Additional Info: Sheephill Road / Sound Beach Avenue: As you drive either way on Sheephill Road you drive up an incline as you approach Sound Beach Avenue. The road tops out for about thirty feet and police love to park on the side of the road (usually between two cars parked on the side)and stick their radar just out beyond their cover. I received my only Greenwich ticket at this location after getting into an argument with a girlfriend. The best rule of thumb on this road is to take it slow anywhere between Orchard and Rt. 1.

Additional Info: Town Police running speed enforcement during days and evenings. Enforcement team consists of several unmarked cars, to include Crown Victoria, Chevy Suburban, and Ford Minivan. All lights are hidden in the grills and taillights. I was pulled over after being clocked with a Laser. I have also had KA band hits on my radar detector. This month they have been focusing around the roads adjoining the Submarine Base. I have learned first hand that if they pull you over don't even bother asking for a break. It appears that they are trying to write as many tickets as they can and do not care if you are defending their country. They also employ a radar trailer. Use Caution!!! around the trailer. I have personally seen an officer hiding inside of the trailer. When a speeding car approaches the officer jumps out from inside of the trailer. Should you be foolish not to pull over a chase car is hidden down the road in the woods or on a side street.

Additional Info: At this intersection the blue guys sit behind the trees on the left behind the stop sign if you are coming from Dixwell. They are looking more for people blowing the stop sign, but if you blow the stop sign you're usually going fast. He's not easy to see if you're going fast (over 30), and he doesn't use a radar but tickets for blowing the sign and reckless driving. Watch out. I've only seen him there 3 times, but it was about a month apart each, so I asume it's a regular spot.

Additional Info: The hamden police department has a speed trap on Whitney Avenue, about a half mile past Skiff Street, going north. It looks like whenever their quota is low, one or two marked police cars will sit on the left side of the road. Because this section of Whitney is a straight line, they will usually Laser you when you're about a half mile away from them, before you can even see them, so once you pass them its too late. I've noticed that lately, a lot of the police cars are leaving their K-band radar's on all the time. I don't know why they do this, since they use Laser for their speed traps.

Additional Info: When exiting off of I-95 Northbound at exit 64 (Horse Hill Rd) do not come to a "rolling stop"!!! The police love this exit and will nab anyone who does not come to a complete stop. They will usually use two cars, one officer stands in the middle of the road pointing to cars to pull over, while the other officer issues tickets to the line of cars pulled over. They work this exit regularly, always during the morning and day, I've never seen them here once it gets dark. I repeat, always come to a complete stop at this exit or you will get a ticket!!

Additional Info: I passed a maroon camaro parked on the side of the road on 84 East near Vernon. I knew it was a police officer due to prior experience, so I slowed down. He passed by me about a mile down the road, and he was pulling a dress shirt on over his uniform to hide the patches on his sleeve. Sure enough...he got someone not 2 miles down the road. BEWARE of Camaros, Crown Vics, Taurus SHOs (and I have even seen a Mazda MX6) on I84 E and W bound! VERY sneaky.

Shortly after we passed the car, he came speeding up behind us with a portable light on roof of car. We asked him what he used to clock the speed. He said, "first I watch for what I think is a speeding car, then I listen for the speed and then I use radar gun last. In view of where he stopped us at state line and how he stopped us, we felt this was entrapment.

Today I noticed for the first time a trap at the truck stop at the above estimated coordinates, north- bound side. An apparent trooper was standing outside a Ford Taurus unmarked, on a radio watching traffic radioing ahead to four or five NYS trooper cars marked, pulling over obvious speeders. I have a Passport 4600 which was on and it did not detect anything. I spotted the unmarked car at the entrance ramp of the truck stop and slowed down to between 65 and 68 mph avoiding a ticket.

There is also chase cars that will run emissions inspections while waiting for speeders. Most often, it is the westbound lane exit of I-691, a new connector between I-91 and I-84 (and the exit for a HUGE truck stop. The local police will stand out of their cars at a very slow-to-turn green light at the end of the ramp and see if your car has a valid emissions sticker, or to wave you over if you're exceeding posted speed of 45 mph (50 mph is the upper limit they'll leave you alone). big on probable cause to completely inspect your car, including seatbelts, wants and warrants on you and your passengers, etc. Can be lucrative! Best avoidance is to slow down to 50 mph and check if the cruisers are at the end of the ramp, or, if you're in the exit lane, to turn right and head north onto State Rte. 10. (Right turn on red and you're only 300 yards from the town line) Otherwise, smile and cooperate totally with the officer, get your vehicle's emission sticker, and you usually avoid the $70.00 ticket. Run mostly at rush hour times, 0800h-1000h and 1600h-1730h during the week.

Additional Info: It appears that State Troopers are using a black 1997 Ford Taurus SHO as a scout car to pick out speeding vehicles which are then pulled over and corralled at the rest area just north of Vernon. I do not know if this is applicable to all drivers, as I was driving a commercial truck at the time. The troopers were regular staties, not the truck safety officers who usually ruin my day. The clocking method appears to be instant on radar and/or laser.

Then right after the underpass, before exit 12, there is a hump in the road as it turns, he sitting in the right breakdown lane leaning out the door with a Laser gun. I had a detector but by the time I slowed down he had already clocked me three times-78,75, and 73. There is an exit ramp right there but he seems to be more lenient if you don't try to run, I tried to run and gave him the song and dance about I was going to get food. But because I came clean with him he only charged me for 75. He said that he has been doing radar from that spot for seven years, and tonight alone 12 people tried to run off the highway, only one got away because someone cut the trooper off.

Additional Info: Local PD uses various marked cars, in conjunction with unmarked cars to conduct local speed traps. They use not only all forms of radar band, but also lidar. All local marked cars are new white Crown Vic's with bright reflective side strips (a dead give-away at night). All unmarked cars are either dark blue, or white Crown Vic's (Look for spotlight on driver's side near front window--the all have them). Also, some officers often use some of the "undercover" vehicles during speed traps and general surveillance. Be on the look-out for a Ford Aerostar van, tan with all BLACKED-out windows (CT plate# 277-HGG). This vehicle is used almost exclusively by the most infamous officer in the town as he often looks for speeding as an excuse to tear your whole car apart--especially if you are a younger person. Places to watch out for are by the Intermediate/High Schools as you head West towards the East Haven/North Branford town line. They will sit in the front lot there and look like they are talking on a phone, but they love this spot after dark. Also, heading towards the center of town, be on the look-out near the fire station. Sometimes they catch people coming up RT 139 and speeding. Another hot-spot in the town to watch out for is near the police station itself! Heading out on RT 22 towards the Northford end of town, as you pass the police station, there is very often an officer parked on the same side of the station waiting with other officers obviously awaiting in the police station's lot. I know of several people to get nailed with high tickets right there. Another piece of advice, basically anywhere on RTs 80,22,and 139, do the speed limit. The officers here are very eager to write you a lovely speeding ticket. More info to follow, as appropriate. ALl

When traveling Southbound in Old Saybrook, trap is located on strait road immediately after the Route 9 exit 3 interchange. Immediately after the Town Transfer Station (dump) the local PD will be hiding in marked cruiser behind clump of bushes on right side of the road. All you'll see, if anything, is the radar pod sticking off the left side of his roof. Limit is 40, I've gotten a warning at 50. Above that, ticket cost unknown. The road is strait and a passing zone, so you're likely to be speeding. Scanner frequency is 159.210- but first transmission you'll hear is them calling in a "9" (a traffic stop) when they nail you.

The cars have red and blue running lights on top at all times which make them easy to spot. They always have their radars turned on even while moving. So if you see the lights, or your radar detector is going off, there is a police car nearby. They generally seem to give you 15 mph over the limit which is 35 for most parts of this road. I got a warning for going 50 in a 35 zone.

He's impossible to see until he's got you becuase he'll either 1) be in the turn around, and be hidden by all the trees, or 2) sit on the right side of the road, where you can't see because of a high embankment, and the road turning to the right before where he sits. The signs over the highway obscure part of the "crotch" of the exit ramp and highway, and I've seen Crown Vic's there (both marked and unmarked). You only see them after you start down the hill. There is also a bridge right before the 39a ramp, and I've seen them there too, those you can't see until you're next to them. They seem to be there 3-5 days in a row, but months apart.

Additional Info: A CT State Police cruiser often sits either on the entrance ramp or in the grassy median between the on and off ramps for Exit 63 (the one for Route 22, Hamden/North Haven) on Rt. 15 northbound. You come down a hill and start turning left as you pass underneath the overpass for the Rt. 40 connector. Then you must crest a shallow rise before you see the off ramp, and you are right in his sights as you come over that rise. At that point, you've already been clocked with laser. My advice: after you pass the Hamden Whitney/Dixwell Ave. exits, slow down as you cross underneath the overpass, so that by the time your car crests that shallow rise before the exit, you're doing no more than 60 MPH.

It appears that they will pull over anyone going over 45, especially eastbound travelers. This speed trap is done at least several times a week, according to local residents. They may also have chosen this place to catch drivers travelling between the local bar (Bidwell Tavern) and U Conn. CT SP can set up at bottom of slope and pick you off as you come over the rise. I've often seen multi-car traps on Sunday evenings in the winter, catching all of the skiiers coming back from Vermont. I got caught on K band going 72 in a 55. Had wife and kids in the car, so the trooper took pity on me and gave me a $75 ticket for driving without a seatbelt (which I did have on) instead of the $200 speeding ticket - which he called a ridiculous amount!

Additional Info: On the grass that separates the highway from the off ramp, a trooper will park his cruiser perpendicular to the highway and shooot lazer out his driver's side window. I have seen this trap a couple of times, both times it has been a standard tan crown vic with lights on the roof. Usually he is alone, but one there were two chase cars a little further up the road. When you are approaching Exit 89 you will see a blue sign that says "Camping Exit 90." At this point it is a good idea to move over to the left (yes, the left) lane and slow down to about 65MPH. If the trooper is there you will be able to see him from the left lane with plenty of time to adjust your speed, but if you are in the right lane you might be in trouble. The road curves so that the left lane has a long clear view of the spot where the trooper sits but the right lane does not. In fact, the last time I passed him there I was in the left lane and my detector didn't even go off, but I saw the gun so he may only have been measuring speeds in the right lane.

There is usaully not to many radar traps, but people who drink and drive BE AWARE. On any given weekend you can easily find a DWI spot check usually between 9:00pm & 2:00am. They usually stop you initially for either seatbelts or emission stickers, and then they bring up the DWI subject. Going north and south they added 2 stop signs about 4 months ago so be careful. If you are coming west up rt.109 you can go around the intersection by taking a right onto Slab Meadow Rd., amd then take you first left onto Straits Turnpike La. and that will take you around the intersection of rt.63 & rt.109. Additional Info: 2 situations. 1. Heading southbound on Super 7 between the Merritt and Route 123 (Exit 2), you will travel on a long, sweeping left over a bridge for 123. On the left, a marked car usually sits behind the bridge abutment. If not there, check after Exit 1 a half mile later, on the long right sweeper. They just sit on the shoulder there. 2. Entering Super 7 southbound from Route 123. On many weeknights, especially towards the weekend, the state troopers will set up a checkpoint, looking for emissions sticker, seatbelt, or minor violations. They will pull you over, and typically have 2 chase cars. Up to 6 cars, lights flashing, it's very obvious, but only after you go into the entrance ramp. At that point, backing up and turning around is not a good idea.

I have been pulled over twice, and it was because I was speeding. My radar detector did not go off. At least 2 officers on duty at all times. Local newspaper (Wilton Bulletin) reports and I and my friends have seen that this town is a pain in the neck. All PD cars are equiped with radar and lasar. Lasar provided by Federal grant! Not fair. Locals use their radar/lasar liberly and are merciless to out of towners. Kind to locals. This is a bad place. Be careful.

Additional Info: I have experienced traps during lunch and early evenings. On Rainbow Road E/W bound to/from exit for Hamilton Standard, I have regularly encountered several speed traps. The police vehicle is either situated in a merchants' parking lot near the package store or is in a low spot in a field right before approaching International Drive. The speed limit on this road is 30 mph, quite appropriate for the residential section, but then the houses disappear and the road is surrounded by tobacco and nursery fields (but the speed limit is still 30!) If you get nabbed, be sure of the type of radar they got you on. If you go to court, that area has the reputation of having a glitch in any *moving* radar used. The judge will probably throw it out.

Some cars have cameras(video) and they will record your driving, tough to argue in court! A recent newspaper article tells of the numerous seat belt tickets given out-Buckle Up! Anywhere I go in Woodbridge, there seems to be a cop running radar- none of these roads are safe to speed on. I have also seen cops in different unmarked cars and you would never know they were a cop. Someone I heard of just got a ticket for going 48 in a 40- WOW! Additional Info: A trap is routinely set up on Baldwin Road, halfway between Route 34 and Route 243 (Ansonia Road). They frequently like to hide near the big farm field. The field (and trap) is located about 1 mile coming from Route 34, and about a 1/2 mile coming from Route 243. They run radar in both directions. Sometimes they are also on the right side of Baldwin Rd. just as you approach Route 243 (heading from Route 34). Also, for those of you traveling down Rte. 243 from Ansonia (Pulaski Hwy.) into Woodbridge: they like to hide at the bottom of the big hill, which is about 1/3 mile over the town line. Do not be deceived by a false reading from a garage door opener emitted by a house on the hill. It routinely sets detectors off, but often times, it is the cop running radar at the bottom of the hill.

Most of the back roads have speed limits of 35 mph. The infractions start at $78.00 for 1 mile an hour over the speed limit and top off at $181.00 for going in excess of 23 mph over the limit. This does not include construction zone violations and other infractions noticed.

About 10 feet after you go under the Merritt Parkway (Rt. 15) overpass you will occasionally find a Smokey down a little dirt road, twenty feet back in the woods, with a bird's eye angle on the road.

Additional Info: In Cheshire, CT This is a major hang- out for the locals- radar is run around the exit and entrance areas of I-691, using laser and older Ka band.

I do not know if this is applicable to all drivers, as I was driving a commercial truck at the time. The troopers were regular staties, not the truck safety officers who usually ruin my day. The police hide their cars behind the barrier which seperates the diamond lane from the main highway as it comes out of the city. There is usually one officer with a laser gun who clocks drivers coming around a corner. NOTE: once you notice the officer, it is too late! Then there is an officer who steps into the left lane of the highway and flags down speeders. There are also two or three other chase cars for those drivers who try to get away. It is operated during both morning and evening rush hours, about three days a week and on some weekends.

ALl

Additional Info: Police hide all over the place ! There is a road on the right headed towards Avon just before the reservoir entrance. The bushes conceal the whole car. They also sit in the parking lot of the reservoir on the right, and also in the dirt lot by the dikes on the left. They are also fond of the dirt turn offs under the power lines. If you are headed into West Hartford, you will be coming downhill and naturally picking up speed. That's where they will get you.

Additional Info: On route 8 southbound, just after entering from I-84, as you begin to leave Waterbury, the expressway comes over a slight rise and begins a long downhill run.

At the bottom of the hill is the driveway, and on many a summer's night they'll sit out for hours on end, nabbing people who fly down the hill. This is quite the popular spot for the SWPD, because they can sit back about 50 feet and you still can't see them until you just pass them. By then, his lights are on and you're toast.

Additional Info: Wolcott cops like to sit along rte 69 in the morning. I almost always see them sitting either at the Cumberland Farms by the post office, or near the traffic light across from Perigini's (i think) Italian restaurant. Wolcott seems to have more than one variety of marked cars, a bright white car and a silver/grey.

Additional Info: Woodbridge has hired half a dozen new cops in the last six months. They have started a new traffic enforcement squad and will be enforcing all equipment and moving violations in the next few months. They will be stopping all cars operating 7 plus miles over the speed limit on routes 69 and 63. They have a new K-9 in service and will be doing drug enforcement along route 63 on all cars traveling from New Haven to Waterbury. The K-9 officer drives a blue ford explorer and he hides near the junction of rt. 67 and rt. 63

Additional Info: This town is BIG on ticketing speeders. I have seen more cars pulled over recently than in the past years. Some of the cops have stopwatches and time you between two fixed points- you'll never even see them or have your detector go off. The state routes here include Route 114, Route 63, Route 67, Route 69, Route 243 and Route 313, so if your on one of these-Be careful when in Woodbridge.
