1830 Census, Anderson County, Tennessee

George Washington Moore and Winifred Peak were my fourth great grandparents.  Joseph Elvin Moore was my third great grandfather.

George Washington Moore was the son of James C. Moore Sr. and Susannah Epperson.

Winifred Peak is said to have been born in 1789 in Roanoke County, Virginia and to have had a sister named Avarilla Peak.  However, her parents names are not known.  I don't know how these details could be known without knowing a bit more about her parents.

George Washington Moore was born in North Carolina, and Winifred Peak was born in Virginia.  I do not know exactly when either one of them moved to Tennessee, but I believe that they were married in Anderson County about 1813.

Mary Parks/Parkes was the widow of Brittain Cross.  Mary was the daughter of William Parks and unknown.

Brittain Cross is often listed as the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross Revolutionary War drummer boy.  However, I do not believe that William and Brittain were father and son.  Rather, I suspect they were something like first cousins once removed.  Brittain's parents are not known.  My prime suspect for Brittain's father is a Henry Cross whom I believe was William's first cousin.

(These three Worthington families, plus the family of Mary Cross, widow of Brittain Cross, were all within five or six houses of each other.  Brittain Cross must have lived close to Lettice Tunnell Worthington with whom he had an out of wedlock child.)

This may be William Scarbrough, son of David Scarbrough and Elizabeth Anderson.  His age isn't quite right -- he was born about 1794 -- but that may be no matter.  If it's William son of David and Elizabeth, then his wife was Margaret Peters.  It appears as if William and his wife were living with some younger siblings, or maybe with a widowed sister of David or his wife and the widowed sister has some children, or maybe a little of both.

It is hard to know for sure, but I am suspicious that this was not "Zephaniah England" but rather was "Zipporah England".  In 1830, my fifth great grandmother Vesta Zipporah (Zipporah) Choate was the widow of my fifth great grandfather John England.  She lived until about 1851, and she owned land and slaves in her own name.  So if seems as if she should be somewhere in the census.  The female age 50-59 was the correct age to have been Zipporah.  So perhaps this was her.

There are certainly no records of any Zephaniah England in Anderson County other than this census record, and if this really was a male named Zephaniah then I would be far hard pressed to suggest where he might fit into the family.

On the other hand, if this was Vesta Zipporah Choate, then it begs the question of who the younger male and female were who were in the household.  For the female, my guess would be Zipporah's youngest daughter Amelia (Milly) England who was born 1807/1808.  As far as the male, one possibility is that we simply don't know.  Another possibility is that it was Milly's husband Jesse C. Cross.  Trouble is, we don't know exactly when Jesse and Milly were married.  It was about 1830, but if it was slightly after 1830 then Jesse could easily have still been living with his father William Cross a few houses away (see below).

My fourth great grandfather William Cross was a Revolutionary War drummer boy.  He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland.  He moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee with many members of his family about 1770/1776, and thence moved on to Anderson County, Tennessee in 1818.  He appears to have been a widower in 1830, although it's impossible to eliminate the possibility that he might have had a much younger second wife.

Alfred Carter Cross age 20-29 was my third great grandfather.  He later married Zipporah Peters.

Elijah Cross was the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross, the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, Elijah was the brother of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.  William was the last name on p.171a and Elijah was the second name on p.172b, so they were living next to each other in 1830.

It seems likely that the unknown daughter was an enumerator's error and was really a son.  Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Winters had a son, John T. Cross, born 25 Sep 1829 in Tennessee.  John T. Cross surely would have been reflected on the 1830 census, and there is no other indication that the couple had a daughter born in the 1826-1830 time frame than this census entry itself.

My interest in the Halls is that Ame Hall married Joshua J. Bray, and Joshua J. Bray was the brother of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray.  So Ame Hall was Edward Payne Bray's sister-in-law.

My guess is that Thomas Hall and James Hall were sons of David Hall.  Ame Hall was married in 1834, so she was probably the daughter of David Hall, namely the 15-19 year old female in the David Hall family.

This appears to have been David Scarbrough, born 1762 in Bedford County, Virginia, husband of Elizabeth Anderson.  I do not know who the male child was.

Thomas Peters was the son of Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte.  Sarah (Sallie) England was the daughter of John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate.  Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England were my fourth great grandparents.

Unless some of the children were nieces and nephews, there were three sons and five daughters.  I have identified everybody except for one daughter.  I am descended from two of the children, namely Jane Peters who married John England and Zipporah Peters who married Alfred Carter Cross.  The John England who married Jane Peters was the nephew of Sarah (Sallie) England.

Henry Peters Sr. was my fifth great grandfather.  Apparently, his wife Mary Wiatt died before 1830.  I am doubly descended from Henry and Mary, being descended both from their son Thomas Peters and also from their son Henry Peters Jr.

I do not know who the male age 05-10 was.  It is not very likely that he was a son.  A grandson (son of a child not listed herein) is more likely.  The two females were probably daughters Millie Peters born 1795 in Virginia and Katherine Peters born about 1801 in Tennessee.  The two women were listed with the surname Peters in census after 1850.

Another possibility is that either Millie or Katherine was a daughter-in-law, and that the young male was a son of Millie or Katherine.

Yet another possibility is that both Millie and Katherine were daughters of Henry, and that the young male was an out-of-wedlock son of one of them.

Henry Peters Jr. and Jane England were my fourth great grandparents.  Henry Jr. is a part of my mother's direct paternal line.  We are also descended from Henry's brother Thomas, but our line back to Thomas is not a direct paternal line.

Henry Peters Jr. was the son of Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatt.  Henry Jr. was born about 1795 and his wife and Jane was born between 1800 and 1805.  I think the age for Henry Jr. in this census must be off a little, probably with one too many zeros.

Jane England is currently a brick wall.  I have several England lines in Anderson County.  It seems extremely likely that Jane was connected to one of them, but I have not been able to determine which line, if any, it was.

John W. Peters age 05-09 was my third great grandfather.  John had a first cousin also named John W. Peters.  The "other" John W. Peters was the son of Thomas Peters.  I have had a devil of a time figuring out which John W. Peters was which.  This census entry is a key piece of data in solving the puzzle.  My John W. Peters married Ruby Smith.  The other John W. Peters married Catherine R. Lea.  According to the 1850 census, the John W. Peters who married Ruby Smith born about 1822, and the John W. Peters who married Catherine R. Lea was born about 1815.

Based on where they lived, it's extremely likely that one John W. Peters was the son of Henry Peters Jr. and that the other John W. Peters was the son of Thomas Peters.  Also, there are tax records and a deed that show that one of the John W. Peters was the son of Thomas Peters.  This census entry demonstrates that the John W. Peters who married Catherine R. Lea was not the son of Henry Peters Jr.  Therefore, the son of Henry Peters Jr. married Ruby Smith, and the son of Thomas Peters married Catherine R. Lea.  It took me several years to find the latter census entry, because it was in Missouri instead of in Tennessee.

This Jonathan Scarbrough is presently a mystery.  Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough Sr. was born in 1795.  I'm not sure which earlier Jonathan might have been in Anderson County in 1830.

Nancy M. Bradley married George D. Messamore about 1857.  George was the son of James Messamore and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  James was the brother of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Stephen's wife Margaret Taylor was still living in 1830.  I do not know why she was not enumerated with the family.

John Bray and Jane were my fourth great grandparents.  Edward Payne Bray was my third great grandfather.

I believe that the enumerator omitted a zero for the females.  Which is to say, I think that Rachel and Emilia were really age 20-29, and that Jane was really age 50-59.

There was another son.  Thomas Bray was mentioned in the settlement of Jane Bray.  I wonder if he died before 1830 and maybe the female age 00-04 was his daughter.  Jane Bray's settlement suggests that Thomas had heirs.

Michael Clardy married second Rebecca Peters, daughter of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough.  Rebecca was born about 1803.  So Michael appears still to have been married to his first wife at the time of the 1830 census.  However, Rebecca does not appear in the home of her parents in the 1830 census.

I believe that Michael's first wife was Nancy Comer.  There was a marriage of Michael Clardy to Nancy Comer in 1895 in Halifax County, Virginia.

Michael and Rebecca were married by at least 1834, because Rebecca sold land in 1834, and the deed listed her name as Rebecca Clardy.

Solomon Disney was married to Sarah, and I think her name was Sarah Bray.  Solomon was listed on the settlement of my fourth great grandmother Jane Bray, wife of John Bray.  I think that Solomon's wife Sarah was the heir of Jane.  Therefore, I think that Sarah was the sister of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray.

I transcribed the entries for Thomas Disney Sr. (line 25) and for Elisha Disney (line 26) because they were living next door to Solomon.  Thomas Disney Sr. was Solomon's father, and Elisha was Solomon's brother.

A Joseph England from Burke County, North Carolina lived in North Carolina until about 1827, applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Anderson County, Tennessee in 1833, he was born 27 Dec 1762.  He lived with his son (name of his son unknown) in Anderson County.  So I wonder if this was him.  However, William (see below) seems much more likely to me.

A Joseph England from Burke County, North Carolina lived in North Carolina until about 1827, applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Anderson County, Tennessee 27 Feb 1833 at the age of 70 (he was born 27 Dec 1762).  He lived with his son (name of his son unknown) in Anderson County when he filed the pension.  So I wonder if this was Joseph.

This gives two possibilities for Joseph in the 1830 Anderson County census -- Joseph father of Alfred (see above) and Joseph father of William.  I think William is more likely.  Joseph had a brother named Aaron and was the son of John England.  The pension was claim S2541.

My ancestor Jacob England was from Burke County, North Carolina.  He was married in 1848 in Burke County and appeared in Anderson County, Tennessee in the 1850 census.  So I wonder if Jacob was related to William and/or Joseph.  I think it was likely, given the common surname and the connection of two different counties, one in North Carolina and one in Tennessee.  But I have no proof.

Samuel was living next door to Nancy, and was possibly her son.

James C. Moore Sr. and Susannah Epperson were my fifth great grandparents.  I believe that Susannah was born on 24 Feb 1767, so I think that her age was ten years too high in the 1830 census.

John Andrew (Andrew) Braden and Dorothy McNeely were my fourth great grandparents.  I have not identified parents for either one of them.  I am descended through their daughter Elizabeth Braden who married Joseph Elvin Moore in 1836.

James Underwood was the son of William Underwood and Susanah Kirby.  William was one of four Underwood brothers who moved from Rowan County, North Carolina to East Tennessee.

William settled in Anderson County.  John, Thomas, and George settled in Sevier County.  John was my fifth great grandfather, and Thomas was my fifth great grandfather (there was a cousin marriage).  So this James Underwood was the nephew of two of my fifth great grandfathers.

Titus England and Elizabeth were my fourth great grandparents.  Titus was the son of John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate.  This is proven by the 1852 settlement of Zipporah England nee Vesta Zipporah Choate that lists " Titus England heirs" as one of Zipporah's heirs.  I do not yet have any clues as to Elizabeth's surname.

I think the enumerator made an error, and that this surely should read 22101-010001.  It's not logical that a 10-14 year old would be head of household.  If Titus had died, then Elizabeth would have been listed as head of household.  In addition, the family appears again in 1840 with Titus as head of household and with a reasonable age for Titus.

This family was enumerated in Anderson County in 1840 with Titus as head of household, and enumerated in Anderson County in 1850 with Elizabeth as head of household, Titus having died between 1840 and 1850.  The fact that Titus died before 1850 is further born out by the fact that it was his heirs rather than he himself who was mentioned in his mother's settlement in 1852.

There was another Titus England, born a generation earlier, who married Elizabeth Stewart.  The only records I have found for the other Titus England are from Roane County.  A number of researchers have confused the two Tituses and the two Elizabeths.  In addition to the fact that the two couples were a generation apart in age, the widow Elizabeth Stewart England was enumerated in the 1850 census in Missouri whereas my Elizabeth was enumerated in the 1850 census in Tennessee.

This Titus England was my fourth great grandfather.  I am also descended from Titus's sister Sarah (Sallie) England who married my fourth great grandfather Thomas Peters.  Titus's son John England married Jane Peters (a marriage of first cousins because Jane was the daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England).  John and Jane were my third great grandparents.

This John Peters was probably the son of Tobias Peters Sr.  The male child born 1820-1825 could then have been John W. Peters who married Ruby Smith.  However, I think it more likely that John W. Peters who married Ruby Smith was the son of Thomas Peters.

The given name of John's wife is a guess.  It appears that John moved to Roane County about 1835.  A John Peters appears on the Roane County tax list in 1836, 1837, 1838, 1840, 1841, 1843, and 1844.  A John Peters appears on Roane County Scholastic Census list in 1840 and 1843.  A Sarah Peters appears on the Roane County Scholastic Census list in 1844.  So it appears to me that John died about 1844, and that his wife was Sarah.

• Edward Wyatt was a Revolutionary War soldier who was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
• My fifth great grandparents Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte were married in 1788 in Greenbrier County, Virginia.
• Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough were married in 1797 in Greenbrier County, Virginia.
• The Scarbroughs were from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
• Henry Peters Sr. was born about 1869 in Pennsylvania.  Tobias Peters Sr. was born 1776/1779 in Virginia.
• The Peters and the Scarbroughs moved together to what is now Anderson County, Tennessee in 1797, not long after Tobias was married.
• In 1830, Edward Wyatt was living next door to John Peters, son of Tobias Peters Sr.
• I wonder if Edward Wyatt might have been the father or uncle of Mary Wiatte.

James Cross was probably the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy, but this is not proven.  In any case, I do not know the names of James' wife nor his children.

Susanah Kirby was the widow of William Underwood.  William was one of four Underwood brothers who moved from Rowan County, North Carolina to East Tennessee.  See James Underwood (above) for further discussion of this family.

William Prichard was the husband of Susannah (Sucky) Underwood.  Sucky Underwood was the daughter of William Underwood and Susanah Kirby.

Sucky's mother, the widow Susanah Kirby, was living on one side of the Prichard family, and Sucky's brother Washington Underwood was living on the other side of the Prichard family.  See James Underwood (above) for further discussion of this family.

Washington Underwood was born in Sevier County, Tennessee. He was from the same Underwood family from whom I am descended in Sevier County.  Washington was the son of William Underwood and Susanah Kirby.  Two of William's brothers were my fifth great grandfather John Underwood and my fifth great grandfather Thomas Underwood.  They were all sons of my sixth great grandparents John Underwood and Margaret Jackman.

Washington's sister Sucky married William Pritchett and was living next door.  Washington's wife was Freely Hill.

The parents of Tobias Peters Sr. are not known.  Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough was the daughter of James Kennedy Scarborough and Rachel Wood.  Tobias was born about 1770 and Rachel was born about 1779.

There seems to be some daughters missing.  Mary (Polly) Peters was not yet married in 1830, and Rebecca Peters probably was not yet married in 1830.
